Television Losing To The Net For Younger Japanese

Postby Mulboyne » Sun Jun 28, 2009 12:20 pm

Yomiuri: Men in 20s plump for Net over TV
Men in their 20s spend more time surfing the Internet than they do watching TV, the first time such a result has been seen in any generational category, according to a study by Hakuhodo DY Media Partners Inc. The research firm's study showed that the male twentysomethings surveyed spent an average of 116 minutes a day accessing the Internet via personal computers, five minutes longer than the time they devoted to watching TV. The firm has been carrying out the survey since 2004, but said this was the first time Net use had come out above TV viewing in any of its generational categories, a result it attributed to the increasing time people are spending watching video on the Internet. The survey examines the amount of time devoted each day to TV, radio, newspapers, magazines and the Internet--either by personal computer or cell phone--in each generation. For the survey as a whole, the time spent watching TV each day was 164 minutes, more than double the time spent on the Internet of 68 minutes. Only men in their 20s spent more time on the Internet using personal computers than watching TV. Females aged between 10 and 19 were found to spend 99 minutes each day using the Internet via their cell phones, far longer than the overall average for this category of 18 minutes. The survey was conducted in February and received responses from 1,919 men and women aged between 15 and 69 living in Tokyo, Osaka and Kochi prefectures.

I attribute it all to the decision by the networks to pull all the late night porn. Seriously what else is there to watch? Shogi matches? Karaoke competitions? Talent variety?

Yeah, that creepy little perv from Tonight2 is trying to do legit daytime programs now. I think he used to direct soft porn, and then hosted the late-night sukebe shows with a real insider's view to all things fuzoku.:)

That was the best show on Japanese TV.

i have this notion that if everyone in the country were to turn the fucking thing off for a month that the results would be akin to an entire nation awaking from a very long coma.

That's a good idea. There are no shopping(buying) days. Why not a no TV month? It might be like Keanu Reeves waking up in The Matrix.

Man, I loved that show. It was more informative than a lot of daytime TV shows and not just the sukebe stuff.

It's interesting that only things in Japan that seems to have production value are the commercials and NHK nature documentaries. All the other TV shows and most of the movies look ghetto as shit. Sure I might get an occassional chuckle from some stupid antics or an interview on a variety show, but I can't think of one show that I would go out of my way to watch.

My visual cortex is generally only assaulted by the harmful rays emanating from J-TV when I'm at the gym and glance up from the book I'm reading. If it's a news program and there are LDP members in da house, I feel like I want to wash my eyes with dishwashing soap, so powerful is the aura of grease, deathbreath, and black shoe-polish hair dye they project.

But then I saw a picture of this guy, and realized that, while Japan has plenty of contenders, the title of World's Ugliest Oyaji for June goes to Mark Thompson, BBC General Director:

Honestly, is anyone here really surprised by this survey. I mean, really? You have to be a very mentally deranged person if you think that there's something interesting on the J-TV, then you really have NO life. I don't even want to talk about the soap operas....sheesh!
