"Summer Jumbo": 10m suckers can't be wrong..

Postby Taro Toporific » Mon Jul 14, 2003 3:19 pm

Outside my window in the diminishing rain, there's a line of 100+ Japanese losers waiting to dump their money on the "Jumbo". This line in Kannai, Yokohama's financial district and almost everyone in that line has a college degree. How do you best say in Japanese, "Suckers"?

July 14, 2003 updated 15:01 / Kyodo Press
TOKYO, Japan - Despite the rain, Japanese line up at lottery booths in Tokyo's Ginza on July 14 to buy Summer Jumbo Lottery tickets, which went on sale nationwide the same day. The jackpot is 300 million yen.

I figured out the average rate of return on this scam over a year ago at around the time of the New Year's "Jumbo" lottery. I think it was much less than 50%. I don't remember which variation I looked at (there are quite a few) but I couldn't believe how bad it was.

It's a sweet deal for the sellers. Business is always brisk. One guy who runs a booth in Shibuya inherited his spot from his family. He's been at it for 10 years, I think.

They should just join into the Powerball family...

then they could have some REAL riots when the payout would hit

(quickie conversion)
US Dollar 263,100,000 US Dollar (USD) = 30,985,287,000 Japanese Yen

(last week's number)

Think of it another way, the Summer Jumbo won't buy a decent house in Kanto.

NHK News (July 14)is offering quite different numbers for the Summer Jumbo payout. :?:

http://www.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/dailynews13.html
The lottery has 42 top prizes of 200 million yen, or 1.7 million US dollars. The second prize is 100 million yen, or about 850,000 US dollars, which goes to 168 winners,48 more than last year.

Can FG win these lotteries? You don't have to be a Japanese citizen do you? Not that I'm planning to buy a ticket, but I'd like to think I had a chance (even if it is a very, very small)

I had a crazy Japanese agent that paid my "bonus" in Jumbo tickets. On one rare occasion I won the 10,000yen prize and cashed it in at the Post Office without any problem...but with lots of giggling by the lady clerks.

Years ago I remember an illegal Jordanian won the 500,000yen 5th prize! When he tried to cash his ticket, he got nabbed and deported with his prize money MINUS 200,000+yen JAL airfare.
