"Whale Muncher" Japanese-Kiwi Assaulted in New Zealand

Postby Mulboyne » Mon Jul 06, 2009 1:37 am

[floatl]Image[/floatl]NZHerald: Schoolboy avoids death after assault
A 14-year-old suffered a potentially fatal blood clot in his brain after he was attacked by school bullies in what appears to be a racially motivated attack. The teen, Japanese-born Ryotaro Wright, needed emergency brain surgery in Waikato Hospital after the attack at Forest View High School in Tokoroa this week. Doctors say he was close to death. Four students have been suspended and police are investigating. Ryotaro's father Llewellyn said yesterday his son had been racially abused by four students over the past few weeks, including being called "whale muncher". "I think they just think Asians are physically smaller than average Kiwis so it makes them easy targets. He's the type of boy who doesn't react normally, he sort of brushes things off"...School principal Richard Crawford told the Waikato Times the incident was "totally unacceptable". He said the school's anti-bullying programmes had clearly failed on this occasion. Wright wants his son's attackers charged, and the main protagonist expelled....more...

This story has been picked up on Japanese sites where it has sparked a lively debate about whaling and racism among other topics.

Those little shits should be charged with attempted murder....

i think the article should read "antagonist" not "protagonist"..

hope the kid is ok long-term and would definitely be interested in any follow-up wrt to his condition. i think this kind of thing really hits home with anyone that has school-aged kids.

Racially motivated or not, what they may have said is totally unimportant. The fact is that they tried to kill the kid, and should be charged and arrested. This isn't about racism, it's about assault/attempted murder.

Even mentioning "suspension" and "expulsion" sounds wussy, like they were caught smoking dope in the schoolyard or whatever; no need for suspension if they're serving hard time, as they should be.

If the law works there like it does here though, unfortunately they'll be out at 18; I don't know how his parents can resist going after these kids with a baseball bat!

Crimes against Asians are not that common in NZ - most Asian crimes are Asians against other Asians. These little shits bring shame on NZ. Sadly the NZ justice email is rather soft so its highly unlikely that these kids will get more than community service, anger management, and maybe juvi. Check in on them in a few years and check their records then; most likely they will be longer.

If all you get is a suspension or a lunch detention, then, hell yeah, go for it. Swing away.
