Again, I need me a real advice...

Postby Coligny » Sun Jul 12, 2009 12:00 pm

I need me some (1 actually) rear license plate for me car. It's to put on the back when the bicycle on their rack hide the real one. I already made the redundant brake/turn/night signals which is a little overkill since out of the original ones, only the 3rd braking light is hidden and just need the plate to put in the middle.

So city hall or police dep ? (i ask first because usually starting with the wrong place means several hours of embarassement were everybody ask anyone in said place until they are sure that nobody know what should be done...)

That's a police problem and for you and this board full of felons is probably the last place you seek advice on a police matter. I would recommend going to the traffic division at the local police station and asking them what to do. They are the ones who will eventually put the grab on you if they classify it as illegal.

The only other answer is put it on anyway and so what if they can't see the license. If nobody bothers you, you will only have to take it off when you do your shaken and then put it back on again.

Asking police advice from felons is the best place...

I am a little confused about the problem.....you have a pushy on the back that hides the number plate? If that's case then why worry?
Any cop pulls you over just show him the plate, tell him to fuck off, and go on your merry way.
48% of the cops won't give a shit, 48% wouldn't know what to do and the remaining 2% will be assigned to some other traffic duty so won't be able to pull you over anyway.

:D

A generous interpretation is that it's assumed knowledge that at any one time another 2% will be at the doughnut shop.

To explain better, and enjoy a little more shame, here's some pict of me Choupimobile Gordini:

Image Image Image

For a better self-shaming here, the front:
Image (as said in a previous thread, it was the cheapest car on the Nissan Lineup while not being a K-Car, even the March was a wee bit more expensive back then since only some speciul edishiun was available at the time)

So as you can see, in the back, it's a wee bit messy (albeit strong and safe). So I made a plate that I put in the back of everything which include turning indicators, brake lights and night lights (module with backing indicator were not readily available, so shoganai). The only detail missing is another number plate since I also included number plate lighting for the night. I could print something and glue on some plastic/styren board. But after doing all that work, finishing with such a hack would be... quite unfullfilling.

For a better understanding, road and traffic laws in France are a posterchild of anal retentiveness and a childhood troma.
non stock exhaust : car impounded
noisy stock exhaust : car impounded
non standard horn : car impounded
broken signal light : car impounded
spare lightbulb box unavailable : car impounded
body kit : if the size of the car is too much changed or clearance are below certain value car impounded.
Too much sticker on any window : car impounded
Kids not in kids seats : you'll be lucky to pass more than 1 cop without being stopped.
Accelerating too fast at the green light : get ready for a full inspection.

When I say car impounded, it's a little excessive. They will just forbid you to go back on the road before you fix the problem.

The strange part is that, in case of fender bender between two car. Usually there is no drama, You don't have to call any cops, they don't want to get involved for material damage, just exchange your insurance data and unless you totalled someone else maybach for the 3rd time in the month, they pay wihout looking too much at who's guilty or not.

That led to a culture of car as disposable tools, the cheaper the better. Also, their is no 'jaf" but every big manufacturer have a special task force of roadside repair mechanics (the biggest being 'Renault assistance' as their cars tend to dissolve a little more after each time it rains). Ready to intervene 24h/24 and fix nearly everything on the middle of the street for quite cheap (you don't have to pay a towing fee). Might be the Parisian equivalent of New York hot dog stands at the corner of the street.

Also, thanks for the answers...

Yea..the enforcement of road laws in most western countries is a lot more anal.

Here in Japan you would be very unlucky to even be hassled by cops for the set up in your photos. Especially as the plate is obviously not being hidden on purpose.
Blacked out plates, stolen kari numbers, plates bent up so they can't be read (most of bikes/scooters) ...the list goes...

Although I personally wouldn't worry about it, the decision is yours. If you wish to err on the side of caution, drop into the cop shop and ask.
