The rain gods have decided to not piss on Tokyo this weekend, so it's up to Edogawa tomorrow to watch the sky explode.

Damn it got cold all of a sudden. Our high temp is forecast to be 19C today. It is the first of August!!! I guess this will be the year of no summer. We seem to have one of these every 10 years or so. Now I will get to hear how there will be no rice, and I will get gouged at the supermarket for any fresh produce.

With many atrophied brain cells, I'm not sure of the year, but, way back in I think 2002, it was overcast and the maximum temp was maybe 30 degrees. News was carrying endless stories of how the summer-beach economies were hurting and that stores had stopped selling shorts, t-shirts, beachwear in late July. Fake bakes were the rage and dermotologists will become richer in the future as a result.

We're baking down south! Regular tropical heat wave. Night never cools more than a few degrees. Keeping my local retailers' kids in college...

Holy crap. the o-ame that swept thru here at the crack of dawn was intense. it has since moved onto Osaka, but man, it tore thru all the little hatake's next to/near the river, and from all the debris i saw dragged through, i thought either a little kei was gonna drift by, or a small log house.. they keep announcing over the local intercom to prepare for tonite.

more crazy rain last night, just as i was about to upgrade our status from "waterlogged" to "soaked".

we got four minutes of sunlight today. it's dark and overcast, threatening to piss on festivals here and in matsue tonight.

We are in the same situation James. Today is the start of the big summer festival, but the weather doesn't want to cooperate. Mind you no rain today, but still quite cool. Needed my futon last night. I hope tomorrow is better as I will join the festival to pull a float through the streets of Hachinohe. Mind you we will start drinking early so I guess the weather won't be much of a factor.

me three.
don't think the sun had a chance with the cloud ridden skies + occasional spurts of water splashing down. today's matsuri and hanabi were put off until tomorrow.. i hope the rain lets up to enjoy one or the other at least.

Despite JR's announced heavy rain delays in what seemed to be all around Osaka today, the rain held off until the PL Hanabi had finished. :p

Sunny and hotter than hell here in Osaka today. Feels like a nice summer day to me! :)

Here's hoping next week is great too, taking a week off and escaping from the real world for a bit.

When you say "escaping from the real world," you mean taking a vacation at crowded public places overwhelmed with loud ugly kids that make you wish, for the love of humanity, the parents had never met, got enebrated, and procreated in the first place.

Actually on the bright side, I am loving this summer thanks to this shit economy. Most hotels I've looked up seem to have vacancies even in August at a reasonable price at this peak season. Everyone is Eco and saving the costs by staying at their inaka jikka home town with their mommies and daddies for obon break.

Hell no. I mean going to my cottage on an island in the Inland Sea where there are few people and a mostly empty sandy beach. No bridge to this island, have to go by boat. No stores, not even any vending machines. Lots of beer, lots of BBQing, lots of R&R.

Unless you are going to be fermenting your own beer on the island, how are you going to achieve this?

I buy a couple of cases at Costco and take it with me. :) Have two fridges, one for food and a dedicated drinks fridge to keep everything nice and cool.

You could buy a helluva lot of beer for the cost of the shinkansen down to Okayama, then taking a water taxi to the island.

During obon with the 1000yen bullshit it shouldn't take more than....oh....48 hours on the road to get there...
