Most of us are Westerner's right? Russian may have a point. We all know there is deep seeded prejudice here and Japanese may view Russians as the hicks of white people, to be avoided. I don't know, I'm just saying being American or English I think we have it much easier than other "white" people.

Why's that? Because a Danish guy played the role of a Russian driver brilliantly? That makes us Europeans?

I mean, yes, those of us from west of the Urals are European, but using Eastern Promises (which is one of my favourite films ever) just encourages the stereotyping of all Russian and Ukrainian girls, and all Russian men, in the UK are whores and mafia. by using that film as a reference, you've just proved your original point about Russians being stereotyped in Japan.

I can't really shed too much light on it, because my previous work in Japan involved working with the Kenyan embassy quite a lot and now I work in Danish design. so while i don't have any problems with most japanese, i'm an exception. and i know a russian in osaka who are university professor and he also doesn't have any problems. i do agree that there is a certain condescension more towards eastern europeans in japan than other 'whites', but that's more to do with global stereotyping. in london, in dubai, i think it's just assumed there that girls are prostitutes and men have criminal connections, just as it is in japan.

that's not to say that i've not had my run-ins with the stereotyping. when i first went to osaka, i was just shopping along the shotengai and some arab looking guy comes up to me and says 'oh, what are you buying? those are some nice cosmetics' and without turning around, i just said in russian 'sorry, don't speak english', and the guy replied in russian 'ah! so what's your price?'. that kind of shocked me, since i've always used russian when abroad to make people go away.

in general though, i think anyone can make it anywhere if they want. but you do have to choose wisely who/where you work. if you go to japan as a russian woman and work in a hostess club, it will be assumed that you're available by the hour. if a russian man goes into some kind of bizarre entrepreneurial adventure, it will probably be assumed he's into something dodgy.

anyway, FR, you are becoming awfully troll-like. and the extremist protest parade picture doesn't help your efforts to be taken seriously.
