Japanese Man Burns Down House Over Gundam Models

Yoshifumi Takabe, a 29-year-old factory worker from a town near Kobe, Japan, was arrested this weekend after he allegedly burned down the house he and his mother lived in. Takabe doused his room in kerosene and set it on fire in a suicide attempt while distraught after learning that his mother had thrown away his "valuable" models from the iconic Gundam franchise, the suspect reportedly told police.

You're 29, you live at home, and the most important thing to you is your gundam collection. It surprises me that this guy's life is actually going to get a whole lot worse.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

That was the same reaction when I first saw this. This guy is 29 and still lives with his mom? Talking about major maza-complex..

He must have figured his marriage prospects had gone up in smoke with his Gundam models.
His [Brendan Behan's] last words were to several nuns standing over his bed, "God bless you, may your sons all be bishops."

Back in my eikaiwa industry days, I recall one guy in his late 40s unemployed and living with his mom. Real creepy one, he was. Said he spent his days in coffee shops reading newspapers and walking around town.

Don't you mean, "wait until your father comes to this smoking pile of rubble that used to our home, young man."

I don't know.. it's Japan Today. They seem to be the Japanese equivalent to the National Inquirer...

I think they are much closer to weekly world news than anything else...
JT "news against foreigners for foreigners..." with moderation made by Takechanpoo clones... with a lesser understanding of the english language... Few years ago my game was to use slang to be as insulting as possible while aiming for language register sure not to be understood by the mods. (back then saying stuff like 'you can shake my Johnson if your strong enough' was totally out of their grasp.

Man torches home over trashed toys
Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010--KOBE (Kyodo) A man charged with torching his home in Kasai, Hyogo Prefecture, admitted Tuesday he did it out of anger because his mother threw away some of his plastic figures from the "Gundam" animation franchise.
"Plastic figures of Gundam are like my life partners. I thought I would rather burn to death with them than have them thrown away," said Yoshifumi Takabe, 30, who pleaded guilty...more...

My first reaction to this title was, "Yet another classic example of TIJ..."
