AP: Dodgers' Kuroda hit by liner in head
Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Hiroki Kuroda suffered a concussion when he was hit in the head by a line drive during a 4-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night, but tests revealed no fracture or internal bleeding. "Amazingly, things look really pretty good," Dodgers head athletic trainer Stan Conte said. "The fact that he didn't lose consciousness is a very good sign." Kuroda was to spend the night at St. Joseph's Hospital for observation. "We worry about, even though there's no bleeding now, that there could be in the next 12, 14 hours," Conte said. "That's why we want to keep him at the hospital. The first 12-to-24 hours is important. The doctors feel very, very good. In fact, the doctors at the hospital didn't even want to keep him overnight. We thought it would be best just to make sure"...more...

I think the same thing happened to Ishii when he was a Dodgers pitcher.

Edit: Just found this up on Wikipedia:

On September 8, 2002, Ishii was struck in the face by a ball hit by Brian Hunter of the Houston Astros. Ishii underwent emergency surgery for a nasal fracture wherein he had bone chips removed and replaced with a small titanium plate. He did not pitch again that sea

If, say, the catcher had have caught that ball would it have been out? Would be in cricket so I assume so in baseball.

Out he would be. Any deflected ball caught by a second, or even third person, before it touches the ground, is an out.

How about if it hits a base runner or an incredibly slow umpire? Cricket it's still out.

A base runner hit directly by a batted ball is out. But not out if it's a thrown ball.

Well, the run would/should be out if he purposefully tries to get in the way of the thrown ball (such as when in a rundown or a pickoff: I seem to remember Reggie Jackson doing this back in the day, possibly in a Dodgers-Yankees world series).

You're right. If a runner goes out of the base path to obstruct the fielder, or a thrown ball, it is usually interference and the runner is out. If he leaves the generally base path area to avoid a play or a tag, he is still out.

Similar rule in cricket, obstructing the field is out, very, very rare to see it though.

I think I saw a high school player at the Koshien who didn't get to go to first after being beaned. The umpire decided that the (brave/stupid?) batter didn't try to get out of the way of the pitch and let himself get hit. But I'm not sure if this is correct or not.

Didn't see that particular one Be, but it is not an unusual call. A batter must make an attempt to get out of the way of a pitch. If he does not, the pitch is an automatic ball with no entitlement to advance (for the base runners and of course, the batter)!

A call like that on a bean ball is unusual as most batters will take one for the team anywhere but the head and they will usually bail when the pitcher comes up and in. But, it is possible, we would have to see what the Umpire saw in order to make a determination as to whether it was a just call, or not.

Interesting to hear the minutiae of the rules, again it's similar to cricket. Anyone would think they're related if they didn't know better.
