The head of the National Police Agency has asked officials of the entertainment world to take preventive measures to rid show business of drug problems..."I want people in show business to make a serious effort to sweep away drugs from the entertainment world," Takaharu Ando, commissioner general of the NPA, said at a press conference Thursday...It is quite unusual for an NPA chief to express his own views about crimes committed by celebrities...Ando said at the press conference: "Drug cases involving celebrities have a large impact on society. We're particularly concerned about the cases' influence on youth"...According to investigators, the current street value of stimulant drugs at about 9,000 yen per 0.1 gram. But in many cases, drug sellers talk celebrities into buying drugs at higher prices than the usual street value as the cost includes hush money, sources said. Sakai's husband, Yuichi Takaso, 41, bought stimulant drugs at nearly double the normal price. Takaso told police he bought the drugs from an Iranian in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo. But police believe a criminal organization was involved in this case. "If we can eradicate drugs in the entertainment world, we can cut off a funding source for criminal organizations," a senior NPA official said. Meanwhile, some production agencies showed a positive attitude toward the NPA request. "We're studying [the possibility of] taking some measures in a positive manner," a staffer at Yoshimoto Kogyo Co. said. An official of another production agency said it would be necessary to make a new rule incorporating drug-testing into entertainers' contracts.
