idiot debito mentioned in TIME magazine

I'm sure this is already somewhere else on this site but the idiot is taking issue with a McDonald's campaign.

Mr. James, dressed in his buttoned-up red polo shirt, tie and khakis, is seen as playing to Japan's xenophobic tendencies. Annoyed expats have described the character as "white, dorky" and speaking "mangled Japanese." The chair of the Foreign Residents and Naturalized Citizens' Association of Japan, Arudo Debito — a naturalized Japanese citizen born David Aldwinckle — has officially protested the Mr. James campaign with a letter to McDonald's Corp

You guys. Debito at least offers a forum where folks can comment free from any worry that the comment will be squelched out of fear of offending an advertiser, unlike GaijinPot or JapanToday. Debito censors comments, but he seems to usually let them through, albeit with an unctious little admonition in bold type.

Maybe so, but while we just bitch about things, Debito at least tries to do something about it and has even won a couple of battles.

Granted some things he does may seem a bit trifling, but at least he's out there trying and we're still sitting here at our computers bitching.....

White dudes, which is most brutal and hypocrite race, cannot endure even a little bit abuses toward them and start whining like a selfish little girl in spite of the very fact that they have been abused and are abusing huge amount of non-white people all over the world.
White dudes must learn endurance.

Don't worry about his vocab. He copies all his big words directly out of the dictionary, but doesn't know what they mean 'cause he can't read (beyond identifying beer bottle labels).

Yep - I use 'em, but I don't know what they mean; I just like how they sound. It's kinda like the person who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

-to quote Dave the Lighting Guy, I ain't a queer or nothin', but I think Debito offers a valuable resource. Who knows, any of us could find ourselves going over there for advice were we to have trouble with, say, the keystones.

Tell em' Take. White people need to learn to suffer and enjoy it. There's a certain beauty in suffering isn't there? Sorta' like how the Chinese and the Koreans suffered under Japanese rule before and during WW II.

But hey, that was Yellow People oppressing other Yellow People so it's ok right?

Hmmm, how about some amateur psychology here...

Let's change white dudes to Take....

I agree with you Cyka, even though he does bring a few incidents to light, it is the way he goes about it, that I have a problem with. He seems to be so put upon and oppressed, that I wonder why he stays. As I wrote on the other thread about the 74 year old arrested with the knife, how could you go through your adult life always being so unhappy and feeling persecuted and that everything and everybody was conspiring against you. He must be rather a rather paranoid type of person.

bringing incidents to light is fine. i think we've all done that at some point or another (in japan and elsewhere). but the one man crusade to actually become a citizen and then attack from within is just not something i get. if you're going to become a citizen, then it basically means you agree with the culture, rules, traditions, politics, etc. it's one thing to hate your own country's politics and as a citizen of that country (assuming it's one with freedom of speech and democratic), you've got the right to speak out about it. but debito is even worse than the fg's that go there on work permits or spouse visas and demand equal rights. you're there because you want to be, not because you're born there. so show yourself the door out if you can't accept it.

he doesn't do anyone any favours. not for foreigners, nor the country that he's decided to become a citizen of.

don't know why, but that depeche mode song 'new dress' popped into my head when i read this. no matter what you do, one person can't change an entire culture, even though it might seem like if you change one person, it might lead to them changing another person, and so on. but at the end of it all, you really can't change the world and the news items he goes after is just going to appear in the headlines for a day and then it'll be back onto aso's latest gaffe or miss japan's outfits.

Sex jibe husband murders wife
Bomb blast victim fights for life
Girl thirteen attacked with knife

Princess Di is wearing a new dress

Jet airliner shot from sky
Famine horror millions die
Earthquake terror figures rise

Princess Di is wearing a new dress

You can't change the world
But you can change the facts
And when you change the facts
You change points of view
If you change points of view
You may change a vote
And when you change a vote
You may change the world

In black townships fires blaze
Prospects better premier says
Within sight are golden days

Princess Di is wearing a new dress

You can't change the world...

oh dear. you're one of THOSE.

japan might enjoy dressing up and trying to look like americans, but they never will be the melting pot of racial tolerance that you'd like to see it be.

the global epidemic of 'white god syndrome', or as GG puts it 'zero to hero', is even more prevalent in japan than other countries (which is one reason why there will never be equality for whites or westerners), and it nearly always comes to bite them in the ass in the end when they leave with their j-wife who stops putting out the day after the ring on the finger and starts demanding the living beyond their means lifestyle. which is poetic justice, really, when it's happened to one of the WGS afflicted.

*should* white people have equality in japan? maybe. will it ever happen? no.

I'm not going to say that cultures are meant to change, aspects of the culture tend to change. Whether this is good or bad is a case by case question.

It's gratifying to see Davie get the attention he needs. I suggest as an encore that he target foreigners acting as fake priests since they obviously perpetuate the image of gaijin as being moral.
