If memory serves Buraku let it slip once that he worked at Nova... Would explain a lot of his overall "the entire world sucks" attitude!

It's getting hard to tell whether the poor souls in the cardboard boxes are oyaji, ex-Nova or bank managers.

A little Nova news to satisfy KJ's bloodlust.

A group of 24 former students of failed language school operator Nova Corp lodged a suit for damages Friday against former Nova management and two audit companies, seeking a total of 16 million yen in compensation to cover prepaid tuition. It was the first time that former Nova students have filed a class action suit since the company went bankrupt last year, lawyers for the plaintiffs said after filing the suit with the Osaka District Court.

They claimed that former President Nozomu Sahashi and other Nova management led the company to bankruptcy after employing illicit accounting procedures and business practices to expand its operations.

Panel rules against decision not to indict Nova, ex-president
OSAKA, March 24 (AP) - (Kyodo) --An independent panel formed by court-entrusted citizens has ruled unjust last year's decision by prosecutors not to slap criminal charges on the failed English conversation school operator Nova Corp. and its former president for failing to pay salaries to foreign instructors and employees, the panel said Tuesday.....

Several men including a yakuza member have been arrested for confining the former president of failed English conversation school Nova for several days in a hotel room, police said.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) arrested several men on Monday, including a member from a gang related to the Yamaguchi-gumi criminal syndicate, on suspicion of confining former Nova President Nozomu Sahashi, 58, in a hotel room in Tokyo's Chuo Ward.
Investigators said that police received a report from Sahashi's acquaintances, saying that they had lost contact with him after he arrived in Tokyo on Sept. 25.
Following an investigation, police raided the hotel room at around 3 p.m. on Monday, where they rescued Sahashi and arrested several men, including a gang member. Sahashi suffered no injuries.
The suspects have reportedly denied the allegations, saying they were "just staying with Sahashi."
The MPD has launched a search for several other people who are believed to have been involved in the case, while questioning the suspects.
In August this year, Sahashi was found guilty of embezzling about 320 million yen from his company's welfare fund and was sentenced to three and a half years in prison by the Osaka District Court. He has already filed an appeal against the ruling.

Ex-Nova language school founder Sahashi's two-year prison term finalized
Japan Times | Nov. 22, 2012
The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by the founder and former president of the language school chain Nova Corp. against his conviction for embezzling ¥320 million from employee benefit funds, effectively finalizing his two-year prison term.
Nozomu Sahashi, 61, was convicted of transferring the sum accumulated at an entity in charge of the funds to a bank account of a Nova subsidiary in July 2007 in order to reimburse students who had signed contracts that they subsequently canceled.

Nova founder ordered to pay damages to former students
OSAKA (Kyodo) 2014feb28 -- The Osaka High Court on Thursday ordered the founder of English language school chain Nova Corp. and three others to pay 19 million yen in damages to former Nova students, reversing a lower court ruling.
The 27 former plaintiffs in western Japan became Nova students from 2002 to the chain's bankruptcy in 2007 and cancelled their contracts without prepaid tuition fees being refunded.
Nova founder and former President Nozomu Sahashi, 62, convicted of embezzlement, is responsible for paying the damages including prepaid tuition fees as he engaged in illegal practices that led Nova to fail, Presiding Judge Ikuo Yamashita said.

190 USD? 190,000 methinks. He did have to do some time as well for purloining his employees' Christmas fund.

What's more significant is that these were just 27 fairly ordinary, if disgruntled, customers. The decision seems to open up the way for many many more to claim against him.

But yeah it's pretty good to be a white collar criminal here and elsewhere all things considered. Only the US ever seems to get really serious from time to time.

Hmmm. Interesting thought. Wouldn't that be great. It would be interesting to know how much TEPCO has paid out so far compared to BP for their piece of monumental stupidity. I wouldn't mind betting TEPCO are well behind even though they have done and are doing far more damage.

BP only got hit for US damage within 120 miles. The rig that got damaged was further out and Halliburtion was found responsible for the fuck up. Nothing happened dur to political connections. By US law it is a UN matter and the UN doesn't care.

Fuck you shima is a problem that would have never happened in the US. First Japan denied the US Navy help four hours after the disaster. Then Tepco denied there was a problem for six days.......

Today Tepco is still here. In any first world nation TEPCO would have been split up and sold to the highest bidders and the exclision area would have been handed over to the government. Shit, this is Nippon and we all need a third retirement. No one ever gets fired. No rich people EVER go to jail.

Nothing has changed since the Edo era. Losing the war didn't change a thing. Nakajima(subaru), Mitsubishi, Sumitomo, Tobu, and all the original familaies are still in parliment.... and business.

The rig that allowed the well to blow out and was reduced to a few bits of twisted metal was UN's responsibility because it was more than 120 miles offshore?

Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)
The exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of the U.S. extends 200 nautical miles from the territorial sea baseline and is adjacent to the 12 nm territorial sea of the U.S., overlapping the 12-24nm contiguous zone. Within the EEZ, the U.S. has:

sovereign rights for the purpose of exploring, exploiting, conserving and managing natural resources, whether living and nonliving, of the seabed and subsoil and the superjacent waters and with regard to other activities for the economic exploitation and exploration of the zone, such as the production of energy from the water, currents and winds
jurisdiction as provided for in international and domestic laws with regard to the establishment and use of artificial islands, installations, and structures, marine scientific research, and the protection and preservation of the marine environment
other rights and duties provided for under international and domestic laws

http://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/csdl/mbound.htm

Halliburton definitely played a major role in the situation getting out of control and yes they have enormous influence which helped them but they didn't get off scot free and the casing not being properly cemented in itself didn't cause the blowout. Along with some idiotically stupid carry on as normal or else behaviour the BOP was faulty and badly maintained which was the last line of defence. The rig operators knew it and tolerated it. The rig crew were clearly undertrained or under orders not to create waves or else. But ultimately it was BP's show, they were in charge and issuing the orders and they rightly had to carry most of the can.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

A girlfriend's grandmother once gave me Domino's Pizza coupons she got for renewing her newspaper subscription - apparently she didn't like pizza. I'm sure she was pissed it wasn't laundry detergent or cabbages or potatoes.

I used to work at Nova - I knew a ton of the people in the advertisements and still see a few familiar faces - I keep in touch with some of them and we've moved on to other work but their faces are still plastered all over Nova's ads.
