The problem is that if you do it "wrong" it tends to set the card on fire. "Oops!"

A magnet will have absolutely no affect on an IC chip.

A magnet would only disable the chip for the duration it was in the field.
Needs an electrical surge or physical damage to disable it permanently.

Easy enough to explain once as, "I lost my card."

Not so easy when the same thing happens 2 days later. ;)

well those boneheads at the local town office gave me my new gaijin card, and as i was half expecting, they went ahead and put my passport number on it. i knew they would do this even after my telling them not to.

so now i'm going back with lurker's kindly provided image and i'm looking for the relevant docs online.

You know Japan is a country that doesn't know what it wants. One ministry claims it WANTS more foreigners to visit Japan while another ministry mistrusts them so much that it takes their fingerprints and pictures on entering the country and then subjects them to this immigration procedure. I like the old system. It felt more...humane.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

Just heard about this today and at first thought I had wasted time and money on a new reentry permit this summer, but it appears otherwise. The way I read it, if you have permanent residency and plan to return more than 365 days after your departure, you will still need a reentry permit (whose validity is being extended from 3 to 5 years).

Is that the way you read it?

So if "We Japanese" get their name on the card in janji/hiragana w/ furigana, how are they going to handle FG names and registered alias? Zainichi? If it's the same as they do now (with notes on the back) I guess it won't be an issue, but if not, it could cause a ton of problems for FG.

Exactly what I'm worried about  ...but I assume "nickname" means just that, not legal alias....otherwise there is gonna be Zainichi riots :D

Bwahahahaha! Activities as a spouse? Can't wait to see the news stories when that gets definition comes into question or the requirement gets abused.

Well they have the writable area on the back of the card which is mostly for changing addresses but below that maybe they can write the katakana name down there?

But there is plenty of space to stick the Katakana under the name looking at the example card. Without it I know what will happen is different places will transliterate your name differently and you'll end up with several Katakana names.

Also how long before it will take Banks or other places to catch up with the new cards when they ask for your Gaijin Card? You hand over the Residents Card and they refuse you for handing over the wrong type of card.

The link is only in Japanese, but as part of the new system we also get on the Juminhyo and Jukinet, where legal aliases can be recorded.

Well that will solve the issue but now have to pay 600 yen to the ward office to get a copy of your certificate like we have to do with the inkanshomeisho as they will only accept a one printed in the last 30 days or so as your name could change anytime. ;)
