I've got by for years on a diet of 20 fags a day and a couple of coffees. My latest visit to the dentist (1st in 3 years, just before I came to Japan), the dentist told me my teeth were 'pretty much perfect', still no fillings or work on them (other than a tiny bit of building work at the back of my front teeth after being attacked when I was younger).

I put it all down to my single brush a day

I was actually told by my dentist in the US not to brush more than twice a day. It wears out the enamel and messes up your gums. I was having problems with my gums and they cleared up when I cut from 3 to 2X a day and quit using Listerine (apparently it kills the good bacteria too).

That is somewhat true. What I was told from my dentist was that you are not supposed to brush your teeth for at least an hour after the meal because your saliva has some effect of killing the cavity causing bacteria. Brushing will only make it worse.

this topic came up at an interesting time.

as i write this, i'm preparing for a seminar for a group of dentists on saturday to practise english dental terms and simple doctor patient dialogues and phrases for the receptionists etc..

an adult student of mine is a dentist who used to work for an ice hockey team (he played too).

when i first came here 12 years ago, i saw all kinds of kids with blackened rotted teeth, teeth with holes in 'em and in some rather frightening arrangements. oral hygiene and dental care really seems to have improved by leaps and bounds over the last decade and braces have become somewhat more common.

up until this year i still prefered to see my canadian dentist, mostly because of the multiple visits b.s. out here in inakaland, even for routine cleanings. i may try again here though.

Actually, I was using 'American' as an adjective. For you Tommy, think of an adjective as a 'describing word'.;)

Key word here people... actually. A lot of Australians start a sentence like that, but I'm willing to admit its because we've been drowning in American culture ever since TV went on the air waves.
