A Filipino couple who were deported to the Philippines in April last year flew back to Japan on Saturday for a reunion with their 14-year-old daughter, who remains in Warabi, Saitama Prefecture. Arlan Calderon, 38, and his wife Sarah, 39, were granted three-month visas for the reunion. Their Japanese-born daughter, Noriko, was granted special permission to remain in Japan by then Justice Minister Eisuke Mori. Under the law, deportees are not allowed in principle to reenter Japan for five years. But Mori indicated he would issue short-term visas to the couple when they left Japan. Arlan Calderon came to Japan in May 1993, a year after his wife. Both entered the country using other people's passports and remained undetected in Japan for years. Noriko was born in 1995. The family of three had hoped to be allowed to remain in Japan, but the Justice Ministry only granted permission for Noriko to stay in the country.
