'Silver Week' another excuse for an unpaid week

Postby Taro Toporific » Sat Sep 12, 2009 8:40 pm

[floatl]Image[/floatl]First 'Silver Week' fall holidays a bonanza for hard-pressed tourism industry
Mainichi -- September 12, 2009
Due to revisions to the Public Holiday Law, Japanese residents will for the first time enjoy a 5-day holiday break beginning Sep. 19 and dubbed "Sliver Week."
The 2003 holiday revisions shifted Respect for the Aged Day from Sep. 15 to the third Monday of September, creating this year's 5-day stretch, called "Silver Week" as a fall counterpart to the "Golden Week" holiday in May....more...

Bucky Junior is taking advantage of the holiday period to return the base, see some college football and even watch a Mariner game and see mommy and daddy. His contribution to the tourism industry.

All these damn holidays mean for the ever-growing numbers of poor office temps is yet another day without pay.
Weekday temps basically have an effective 5-10% pay cut every month in the last half of the year due to all the friggin 3-day weekends. Silver week makes it even worse, losing 3 of 21 work days means losing about 15% of your paycheck.

How does this help the economy?

But hey, the bureaucrats who decide these thing have no such worries. Probably not even aware of this issue. Too busy planning trips to Guam.

Hey I like five day holidays. Seeing as usually work seven days a week, a few days in a row off isn't tht bad an idea. Now if I could only convince my wife not to book us onto some dreary bus tour of the Nankoku Lint Museum.

Why am I reminded about the old saw of the young bull and the old bull standing on the hill overlooking Roppongi bokujo and its endless supply of cows. Quote the young bull, "let's run down the hill and do a couple of those cows! Replied the old bull. "Let's walk down and do 'em all".

Never enough silver, that you can't use a little more...

Looks like Silver Week was a one-off thing. :(

This year we have old farts day on Sept 20th (3rd Monday) and Autumn Equinox day on Thursday the 23rd. The extra 3rd day from last year appears to have vanished.
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

I read Lurker that the silver week thing will occur once every seven years when the holidays line up. Would be nice to have a couple more days off in September though.

2016!!!! I'm so psyched! Now, just watch....the fricken Mayans are right, and we're all dust in 2012. No more Silver Weeks ever...I'll be so pissed.
