Hopkins student kills intruder with samurai sword, police say
Off-campus house was burglarized Monday; suspect recently freed from county jail

A Johns Hopkins University student armed with a samurai sword killed a man who broke into the garage of his off-campus residence early Tuesday, a Baltimore police spokesman said.

According to preliminary reports, a resident of the 300 block of E. University Parkway called police about a suspicious person, department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. An off-duty officer responded about 1:20 a.m. to the area with university security, according to Guglielmi. They heard shouts and screams from a neighboring house and found the suspected burglar suffering from a nearly severed hand and laceration to his upper body, he said.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Based on the initial investigation, the student killed the man with only one strike of the sword, according to Guglielmi. The medical examiner will make the final determination, he said.

The student told police that he heard a commotion in the house and went downstairs armed with the sword, Guglielmi said. He saw the side door to the garage had been pried open and found a man inside, who lunged at the student. There was no indication that the suspected burglar was armed, however, according to Guglielmi.

Burglars had already stolen two laptops and a Sony PlayStation from the student's home Monday, Guglielmi said.

Dennis O'Shea, a spokesman for Johns Hopkins, said all four residents of the house are undergraduate students at the university. Police had released three of the roommates by Tuesday afternoon. The student who wielded the sword remained in custody while investigators worked to corroborate his story with evidence and witness statements. Police have not released the name of the residents, but department sources identified the detained student as John Pontolillo, 20, of Wall, N.J.

The city state's attorney's office will determine whether to press charges, Guglielmi said.

Man, that is bad ass. Reminds me of that scene in Pulp Fiction, but you know, without the sodomy.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

He's cool. He won't go to prison for this. Act of self-defense.

Fuckin Nihon needs to establish self-defense laws too instead of having to rely on the anti-bike-snatching police force.

It's not always that cut and dry. Especially outside of states like Texas.

It likely depends on the circumstances, esp on the layout of the house...if Kuwabatake Sanjuro entered the garage through his home (ie, like a townhouse with garage on bottom) that will go a long way to help him out, since its likely the garage will be seen as part of the home with limited retreat options for the occupants as well as giving the burglar the ability to retreat....if the garage is separate or semi-attached and therefore possibly not seen as a part of the home and Kuwabatake Sanjuro blocked the burglar's ability to retreat by approaching from the car entry of the garage, then he might have some problems.

Hopkins Student With Samurai Sword Kills Theft Suspect
Baltimore Sun
Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Hours earlier, someone had broken into John Pontolillo's home and taken two laptops and a video-game console. Now it was past midnight, and Pontolillo heard noises coming from the garage out back.

The Johns Hopkins University undergraduate didn't run. He didn't call the police. He grabbed his samurai sword.

With the 3- to 5-foot-long weapon in hand, Pontolillo crept toward the noise, police said. When a man inside lunged at him, police said, the confrontation was fatal.

The student "was backed up against a corner, and either out of fear or out of panic, he just struck the sword with force," said city police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. Pontolillo, who rents the off-campus home, nearly severed the man's left hand, inflicting what police called a "spear laceration."

Donald D. Rice of Baltimore, 49, a repeat offender who had been released from jail Saturday, died at the scene.

Guglielmi said the state's attorney's office will decide whether to charge Pontolillo, 20, of Wall, N.J.

In a statement Tuesday, Hopkins officials told students that there had been more than a half-dozen recent burglaries in the area and that the police presence would be bolstered.

Diego Ardila, a student who lived with Pontolillo in the home this summer, said, "From what little I know of him, he wasn't some guy going out to kill."

University of Maryland law professor David Gray said prosecutors must weigh whether Pontolillo thought he was in danger or became the aggressor. If he thought he might be severely harmed, then he was within his rights to protect himself, Gray said. "It doesn't matter if he used a gun, a sword or a frying pan."

Report: NYC Actor Slays Mom with Samurai Sword

NEW YORK, Nov. 23, 2010

"Ugly Betty" Actor Michael Brea Kills Mother with Sword while Screaming Bible Passages, Media Outlets Report

(CBS) An actor who has appeared in the TV series "Ugly Betty" killed his mother with a samurai sword while screaming Bible passages, New York media outlets reported Tuesday.

Michael Brea, 31, went on a religious rant, ordering his mother to "repent" before stabbing her to death, the Daily News reported.

Sources told WPIX 11 News that Brea used a samurai sword to attack his mother, whose body was found hacked and decapitated.

The victim, identified as 55-year-old Yannick Brea, was dead when officers arrived, WPIX reported.

Neighbors on the first and third floors of the Brooklyn apartment heard screams coming from the second floor apartment at about 1:30 a.m., the station reports.

"I hear the brother chasing her [his mother] through the house and he's just saying a bunch of like [Bible] passages like, 'Repent, Repent, Repent,'" neighbor Gregory Clare told WPIX. "I heard him chasing her through the house and I hear a loud scream and so I have my father call the cops, call 911."

Brea was arrested and taken to Kings County Hospital for a psychiatric exam. Neighbors told the Daily News that spattered blood was visible on the apartment windows.

In addition to "Ugly Betty," the Haitian-American actor appeared in the movie "Step-Up 3-D" and starred in a campaign for the energy drink Full Throttle, according to a Haiti Internet movie database website.
