[floatr]Image[/floatr]Kyodo: Kao halts cooking oil sales due to concern over alleged cancer effects
Kao said Wednesday it will suspend shipments of Econa cooking oil from Thursday amid anxiety that one of its ingredients, glycidol fatty acid ester, could cause cancer.

The Econa series, some 46 products in all, also includes mayonnaise and salad dressing. The cooking oil is used in a further 13 lines of dog food. It's a mainstay product for Kao and clocks up annual sales of around 20 billion yen.

They covered this pretty extensively on TV last night. Kao stated this is based on information developed in Europe that indicated it had possible cancer causing ingredients. They said the J-FDA had not ruled on this and it was a unilateral move by their company.

Based on whatever findings are forthcoming they would hope to reinstate sales of the cooking oil after the first of the year.

Yeah, they've been concerned about this in Europe since early this year...

Should all of you soap land dwellers be worried about this now? Wait.. cooking oil? How does Kao soap and cooking oil interrelate? Oh well.. fuck it. I didn't see the article in its original Japanese format, anywhere.

Meanwhile, in other news, it seems like the same Kyodo guys were having some trouble with the Chinese authority... I am sure it doesn't affect their news credibility in any way.
