I just hope they were not waiting for a helicopter rescue. http://www.japantoday.com/category/national/view/helicopter-crashes-in-gifu-during-rescue-attempt-3-aboard-killed
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

Well, when you live in a society where you can't even carry a knife on you without being arrested than of course one little ninja bear would be able to take out a whole shit load of tourists...

The video only shows a portion of the attack but in that portion nobody was doing anything to help the person being chewed upon by the bear. I'm not brave but I would have been chucking rocks or screaming at the thing. Get the kids and elderly away but the adults should have been helping.

Another great example of bystander apathy in Japan no?
..or more like, believing it's wrong to intervene, even in an extreme situation like this (bear vs man) as opposed to (pervert/drunk vs girl)

edit: yeah, like behan mentioned, i would have tried to do something, instead of just stand and watch someone become lunch.

don't hate. masturbate.

The bear was just doing what bears do. If you don't want to get attacked by a fucking bear, stay out of the woods... period.

but helping out would mean they can't stand there and film it for the interweb masses.

i think youtube should be shut the fuck down if they can't control who uploads what. am so tired of seeing homemade videos of stupid stunts, babies playing with snakes, attacks both human and animal. it just encourages people to stand back and film tragedies instead of being productive in hope of being the next million hit wonder.

Yeah, they seemed to be quietly gawking like it was some kind of street performance; that's more frightening than the actual bear! Empathy seems to be totally lacking.

Running for cover would have been cowardly but understandable. This just looks creepy. 8O

The group was quietly and calmly building a consensus about what should be done. Once everyone had their say, and all the pros and cons had been weighed, and the most senior member of the group identified so that his plan could be deferred to after all the discussion, then they were going to act...

People don't want to do anything, it would mean, getting involved and that means, he or she would become part of the problem, either owing the people that they helped a favor(s) or owing the bear a favor as in being a sacrificial mutton.

The bystanders didn't want the maulee to be put in their debt by saving their lives. Endless gift-giving and okaeshi could ensue.

That can be precluded by simply having the proper bear warning sign, like the conservationists use in Canada (or California):

Japan just needs more conservative loggers, like the ones in this story.

The Pope took a couple of days off to visit the mountains of Alaska for some sight-seeing. He was cruising along the camping ground in the Popemobile when there was a frantic commotion just at the edge of the woods.

A helpless Liberal, wearing sandals, shorts, a Save the Whales" hat, and a "To Hell with Bush" T-shirt, was screaming while struggling frantically,
thrashing around trying to free himself from the grasp of a 10 foot grizzly.

As the Pope watched horrified, a group of Republican loggers came racing up. One quickly fired a 44 magnum into the bear's chest. The other two reached up and pulled the bleeding, semiconscious Liberal from the bear's grasp. Then using long clubs, the three loggers finished off the bear and two of them threw it onto the bed of their truck while the other tenderly placed the injured Liberal in the back seat.

As they prepared to leave, the Pope summoned them to come over. "I give you my blessing for your brave actions!" he told them. "I heard there was a bitter hatred between Republican loggers and Liberal Environmental activists but now I've seen with my own eyes that this is not true."

As the Pope drove off, one of the loggers asked his buddies "Who was that guy?"

"It was the Pope," another replied. "He's in direct contact with heaven and has access to all wisdom."

"Well," the logger said, "he may have access to all wisdom but he sure doesn't know anything about bear hunting! By the way, is the bait holding up, or do we need to go back to Massachusetts and snatch another one?"

I grew up in bear country and when I was 13 I was charged with walking to the school bus with my brother and sister down a 1mile dirt road in the country. Of course I took along my trusty 410 / 22 which I stashed in the weeds. Fuck pepper spray. When I was 15 I upgraded to a Model 24 with plug removed - double 0 loads.

For sure the people standing by were right not to risk their ass. A 300lb blackie would've torn them apart like paper dolls, rocks and all. If they wanted to rescue an attacking bear then the only thing that would be sensible is a dog and alot of loud noise to disorient the bear. Then follow up with a large chunk of lead at about 1000fps.

Coming from LA, we have lots of black bears and I agree, make noises, throw rocks, but getting in a bears way, is complete and absolute suicide. Not to mention, most bears aren't afraid of humans anyway, so the bear can calmly munch on you, calmly knowing that, "you ain't gonna do shit to me kind of attitude." Personally, I think a RPG would be better to do a bear in, but if you miss, you'll have to deal with one pissed off bear that will be looking for a little payback!

Most bears will do the best they can to avoid humans and the ones that don't are the ones you don't want to mess with. They have either lost their weariness towards people due often to open dumps that provide them with an easy food source or they are starving. When a bear attacks with that many people around it has almost certainly gone rogue and rocks, knives, dogs and noise are not going to deter it.

I can believe you are right, Dimwit, but I would still try to distract it if I saw it trying to eat someone. Those people in the video were standing pretty close.

I don't think a rock would hurt it but it might distract it.
