The 50 best things to eat in the world, and where to eat them

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Sep 23, 2009 2:50 pm

The Observer magazine asked several of the London's top restaurateurs for suggestions on the world's best food and where to get it. It's not intended to be authoritative, and you can't see who selected which entries, but there are a couple of Japanese inclusions:

25. Best place to eat: Sushi
Daiwa sushi, Tokyo

If you want the world's best sushi, don't even think of looking anywhere but Japan. Empty your bank account and eat at one of Tokyo's swankiest sushi temples, such as the three-Michelin-star Jiro in Ginza. Alternatively, go right to the heart of the action, to the city's overwhelming Tsukiji fish market (the largest on the planet), and eat unsurpassable sushi for a fraction of the price at Daiwa Sushi. It's a fast-moving hole-in-the-wall establishment without tables and it's only open for breakfast, but none of this matters once the expertly prepared rolls come your way. Try the melt-in-the-mouth tai, a type of sea bream that is impossible to get outside Japan.

50. Best place to eat: Ramen
Ramen Jiro, Tokyo

"People in Japan always say ramen (Japanese noodle soup) can't be this and can't be that. Ramen Jiro is very non-traditional, in your face, take it or leave it. You either love it or hate it, but people who like it are good people. It's got pork, it's got cabbage, it's got garlic, and the sauce is sweet. It's gnarly. There are several branches; my favourite is the one near Keio University."

Ramen Jiro

Postby Sloth » Wed Sep 23, 2009 11:38 pm

I read this on the guardian website and, since I had nothing better to do over my silver week, tried to go to the ramen jiro closest to me in Musashi-Koganei. Unfortunately it was closed and I had to go to the extremely bimyo one next door.

That's because as usual, these quality reporters never bothered to set foot on Japan or even put in the effort to ask where the locals go to kick it for a quick meal. Instead, they made up a bullshit list of pretentious places to eat that no one goes to. I agree, Ippudo is the place to rock out at 3 am as the hang-over cure.

I would'a thought so too, but his NYC hamburger choice (No. 3) was right on with this comment...
Killian Fox, The Observer wrote:...the meat, which is a signature blend from New York's virtuoso hamburger maker Pat La Frieda, is perfectly paired with a bun of uniquely moist and yielding character.

I've never been to Little Owl in the Village (a little pricey, but not unapproachable and good reviews) but I do buy only Pat La Frieda hamburger meat. I truly believe it's the best in the city and not expensive either - I've gotten it on sale for as little as $3.99 a lb. The only down side - it's not organic... yet.

So some NYer must have steered him in the right direction.

The selections weren't made by the Observer journalists. They are all the personal choices of the restaurateurs listed. There's no way of being certain but it's possible that Jun Tanaka of Pearl came up with the sushi recommendation while Alan Yau of Wagamama chose Ramen Jiro.

Daiwa Sushi is one of the least pretentious places in the world.

31. Best place to eat: Pizza
Frank Pepe Pizzeria, New Haven, Conneticut

This is an idiotic thing to write. There's hundreds of pizzerias in Italy who would do as well as or better than Frank Pepe.

I can't comment on Frank Pepe but you can't beat pizza in the North Eastern US.

Yeah, the NY and Chicago pizzas would destroy the Italian homegrown any day of the week.

Done the Ramen Jiro in Shinjuku a couple of times. Afterwards, the stomach engages in much gurgling, as if I will eventually spackle the toilet. However, I am pleased within the next 20 hours or so that an about average stool is emitted.

I've never understood the big deal about ramen Jiro. I used to live close to the honten in Mita and it was ALWAYS packed, even at 10am or so.

The noodles are good, but other than that, I don't see what all the fuss is about...

best places to eat are always local street markets. chinatown night market in singapore has provided some of the best meals of my life.

along with a little tiny sashimi place in umeda (whose name i always forget) where your dinner is still waving at you while you eat it.

the crab cakes at tableaux in daikanyama. the teppenyaki place in kohamajima where we had those lobster/prawn hybrid things that we just caught hours before with ishigaki beef.

dim sum in hong kong. pellici's in london for the best hangover fryup. any pelmeniya in moscow for pelmeni that will fill your gut for days.

mmmmm...

Oh no! You are one fat f*ck (at least by the Japanese standards).

At what height? I still give you the benefit of the doubt and say you are at least 170cm.
