Japanese suit that fights flu

A Japanese company, Haruyama Trading Co., has developed a suit that it claims protects the wearer from the deadly H1N1 strain of influenza.

The company has produced 50,000 of the suits and will start selling them on Thursday, according to a company spokesman.

The suit is coated with the chemical titanium dioxide, which reacts to light to break down and kill the virus when it comes into contact with it, according to Junko Hirohata. The chemical is a common ingredient in toothpaste and cosmetics.

The suit - which is indistinguishable from any other worn by Japan's legion of "salarymen" - comes in four colours and styles, which are medium grey, charcoal, navy and a grey pinstripe. It will go on sale for about £365.

The company said it spent a year developing the suit, which retains its properties even after being washed numerous times.

Japan has been gripped by swine flu fear since the global outbreak began a year ago, with the World Health Organisation confirming more than 340,000 cases worldwide and around 4,100 deaths.

A seven-year-old boy became the latest victim in Japan on Sept 22, the youngest and 18th fatality from the disease here.

In the same week, medical institutions across the country reported treating 23,275 cases of influenza, the majority with the new H1N1 strain. Most of the new cases were reported in urban areas, where population density increases the risk of transmission.

Throw in a few buzzwords like "minus ion" as well. What a gimmick.

While the good ol' fashion way costs less than a buck.

Who is a bigger idiot, the person who made the suit or the person who buys the suit?

If the company that produces them turns a nice profit, they aren't idiots at all.

That was my point. But how could they sell enough to make a profit, they would have to be in a market where there are hundreds of men willing to drop something like 50,000 yen on a suit that they say will prevent you from getting a virus. Where in the world do stupid people with a lot of money to blow on stupid things live? Where indeed?

My guess is they just sprayed suits they were already producing with the chemical compound and put anti-swine flu tags on them at minimal extra cost. If it doesn't catch on, they can just take off the tags and sell them as regular suits.

I hear this suit also repels the dreaded "gaijin stink". Of course I smell like ashes of roses.

I'm giving up quadrapeds for Xmas, Hannukah, and Kwanzaa, and but, since the world is ending in about 3 years, 2 months, and 12 days, I'll be back courting livestock & deadstock soon.

Depending on a late night of being heavily intoxicated to some individuals both 2 and the 4 legged kind, you might become sexually appealing.

If anything I'd be at the local kosher cow slaughtering facility. With their "Advanced Meat Recovery System", the cow gets a nice muscle kniption after the blade is sliced acorss its throat and if you time it all right....its better than a donkey punch.

There's a sucker born every minute...
The H1N1 virus can live on hard surfaces, like stainless steel and plastic, for 24 to 48 hours. It can live on soft surfaces, like cloth, paper and tissues, for eight to 12 hours. But, the virus can only infect a person for up to 8 hours after it is deposited on hard surfaces, and for up to only a few minutes after being deposited on soft surfaces.

A farmer sprays milk on police forces during a protest against falling milk prices outside the European Headquarters in Brussels. Farmers on slow-moving tractors brought traffic in Brussels to a standstill on Monday as EU agriculture ministers discussed their demands for more generous EU support for dairy prices.

I saw that segment, quite funny. But people take germs very, very seriously in Japan and if you even get a sniffle, it's quarantine time!

Agreed. The attitudes toward this illness are ridiculously out of proportion with the actual threat. They make this sh*t seem like it's the Black Plague of the Middle Ages.

Two weeks ago, I had a light walking flu, but I just took some Dayquil and called just never mentioned anything about it, because if the school would have found out about it. They most definitely would have called the Hazmat crew to eradicate any bio hazards that I would have left behind.

I laughed my head off when I read this post and imagined the reaction had they found out...bloody gaijin and their diseases....

Having said that, I remember a Japanese guy I used to work with. He would never take a sick day, no matter how awful his condition was, but he over-reacted enormously, acting as though the most minor of ailments was a life-threatening illness. It was all an incredible show put on for the bosses to display what a tremendous worker he was (and he was incredibly talented).
He got chicken pox and came to work as the sores sprouted over his body (and with a pregnant woman working nearby, too). It was gross, with pus running down his face and stuff....but none of the other Japanese staff said a word to him. The pregnant woman left soon after, but I always wondered whether her baby had been affected/infected by that guy.
...sorry, really drifted off topic....
