Shipments of beer decline 2.4%
Kyodo News

Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009

Domestic shipments of beer and beerlike drinks in the first nine months of this year dropped 2.4 percent from a year earlier to 345.25 million cases due to unseasonably cool summer weather, according to industry reports released Tuesday.

It was the lowest total since officials began compiling comparable data in 1992.

Among major brewers, Kirin Brewery Co. captured market leadership with a 37.9 percent share in the nine-month period, overtaking Asahi Breweries Ltd. for the first time in three years.

Asahi's market share was the second largest, at 37.3 percent, followed by Suntory Holdings Ltd. at 12.4 percent.

Not surprised considering that summer in Tokyo this year lasted for what seemed like about three days spread over three months....

This article fails to mention the sales increase of hapP.O.S.hu so when that comes in factor, I wouldn't really say that the last summer was a bad one.

Please. Anyone who says J-beer sucks doesn't know shit about lager. If you like stouts and ales, I can understand where you're coming from but if you like lagers, Japan's are top-notch.

I completely agree with you there. If Japanese beer tasted like shit, I would have lived in Germany instead.

lager sucks. Might as well drink budwater. Real beer comes dark or lambic. The only good beer that can be found easily here is chimay blu and it it is extremely overpriced just like good table wine. J-folk have no idea what good beer or wine is, they only care about getting a buzz.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Personally, as a beer connoisseur, Germany has the patent when it comes to beer. We all know everyone has different tastes, some Prefer lager, others ale, personally, I go for the Pilsener, it's the best. Usually, Japanese beer is like an overrated Bud, just watery, no flavor. Again, personal opinion. I think when it comes to Nihonshu, the Japanese have that department down pat, but beer is a totally different topic.

So what you're saying is that pilsener is different from lager? And at the same time claiming to be a beer connoisseur?

You can't be serious.

I keep hearing about good local microbrews but I would have to go all the way to Gero just to try one out, if Japan started having regional brews at bars that everyone drinks, like Fat Tire is to Pacific Coast or Sam Adams is to New England, than I would be more interested in Japanese beer, don't get me wrong, I will drink an Ebisu or a Kirin any day, especially at a beer garden or during a hanami, but don't just expect me to enjoy it as much as I would enjoy a good flavorful beer.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

Why not just pop into many convenience stores, or any department store or large liquor store in Gifu, and get yourself a Ginga Kogen, or a Yona Yona Ale, for example?

Thanks for the heads up, strange that I haven't heard about those, I think I have seen them around at a few places but I never heard that they were any good.

What Oxlong said. Yona Yona is a solid pale ale. One of my fave IPA's and overall fave beers in japan. Ginga kogen is a nice brew too, if you're into wheat beers (I am)

As I have said before on the FG Forum, Janaese beer is almost as good as
"Bullfrog Beer--- pride of Peoria" at $3.99 a 6-pack(see below).

Analysts and breweries are bullish on "third-category beer" sales as Japan's alcoholic tastes nosedive

So much for the myth of highly refined Japanese taste buds. The truth is that the majority are just like everyone else, and beer and beer substitutes are really nothing more than a vehicle for transporting alcohol into their bloodstream. Taste be damned.

If third category beers are half the price of proper beer, I'd much rather buy three cans of the latter than a six pack of the former. I've tried Kin-mugi and a few of the other almost-beers, and admittedly the first sip can fool you, but by the time you've finished a glass or two the aftertaste kicks in, and it's not pleasant.
