Rugby Players Bemused By Tattoo Taboo

[floatl]Image[/floatl]The Age: Wallabies winger not happy with cover-up
Wallabies winger Digby Ioane says it is "sad" and "weird" that he and teammates have to cover up their tattoos in parts of Tokyo because of cultural differences. Like many players in the All Blacks ranks have also learned this week ahead of Saturday's Bledisloe Cup Test, body ink is not well received in Japan. The All Blacks' pool sessions in Tokyo have revealed the quirky sight of most players in the 33-man squad wearing their techfit training vests to cover their arms and torsos, complete with swimming caps. It is a mark of respect to Japanese culture which frowns upon the displaying of tattoos, which traditionally associates a person with the yakuza, or Japanese mafia, who are heavily tattooed. Ioane said the Wallabies had been tipped off before leaving Australia that they too would have to cover up in some public places in Japan. "I'm a religious person and none of my tattoos represent like gangsters or anything," he told AAP on Thursday. "So it's a bit sad where it's really important that you've got to cover it up for some people, because I think people will judge you by your tattoos on your body. I don't know, it's a bit crazy. Back in Australia, we were talking about it and I thought it was a joke. But it's pretty serious, I guess." Ioane said fortunately the Wallabies were able to use the gym at Japanese club Ricoh Black Rams, where former Australian Test great Stephen Larkham is among the stars. "Because half the team's got tattoos, I guess," he said. "A lot of the boys were teasing me about my tattoo on my neck - I've got to tape it up. But lucky for Ricoh, they helped us with the gym so we don't have to cover them up. "It's a bit weird over here, but we've just got to move on from that." Wallabies team manager Phil Thomson said the players would not be asked to cover their tattoos during Saturday night's Bledisloe Cup Test at Tokyo's National Stadium.

I have a friend who once went into a gym to sign up for membership, gave her the tour and everything, but when she took off her shoes to reveal a butterfly tattoo...needless to say that was the end of that tour. At least they are letting the use the pool as long as they cover up the tattoos, which is kind of messed up, but they could have just as easily refused them access, but in this case i guess money talks. I just hope someday people in Japan see tattoos for what they are, art, but until then I still have to shower at home.

P.S. - Those are bitching angel wing tattoos.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

Whatever, just don't see them as signs that person who has the tattoo is a gangster.

Indeed... and I'm pretty sure I saw it not that long ago...

What bother me is the sheer stupidity of this behaviour. It's note against yakuza. They'd probably shit themselves silently if they were in front of a real yak. It's to protect the feeling of people who think only yakuza have tatoos... (and all yakuza are tatooed)

Are you on crack? 'Real' yaks are pussies. Wallabies and All Blacks would punch the fuck out of 'real' yaks in a heartbeat.

Hum... I know that my english ain't no native stuff... But I never talked aboot allblack versus Yaks. I talked aboot store managers and tatoo policies versus yaks.

It's easy for store mangers to stand in front of a gaijin and say "baaad gaijin, no tatoo here, get out". Because there is nearly 0 chances to face any kind of retaliation, unless it's against Aruto Debito, in this case you will have your 15 minutes of fame in a strongly worded blogpost. The same store manager would certainly look somewhere else in front of a real yak. Japanese fear of the yak is like fear of spiders in first world countries. It's not rationnal, it more a social kind of stuff. Yeah I consider them like pussies, of more like overgrown playground bullies, especially after having worked in some 'hot' suburbs of Paris (office space wuz cheaper), places were throwing fridge and other kitchen appliance on bullet train railtracks from overpass bridge to see how they derail was called "quiet sunday afternoon". Or car burning was the thing to do to celebrate newyear's eve.
