A lot of homes in Okinawa rent out at 3 grand USD a month to military families. The rent is determined by the housing subsidy available to service members. Nice for some, but rather extravagent for Japan's poorest province.

I still don't know what the base guys are bitching about...thats looks about a 75 hebei house....and paid for by the us gov't....off base of course you get an allowance based on marital status, kids etc... don't quote me as I am not american, but it seems altogether a decent setup in Japan for a family or even a great bachelor pad....whats the problem of living in base? (besides the mp's of course)

This is going to devastate the economy in Misawa. There has been such a building boom going on, and it is mostly houses for US service members. With the service members not living off base, the rents charged to non military will also fall. The gas companies, electrical company, water etc. will all suffer. I wonder if there is another reason for this order? But the strange thing is that they will still allow single airmen to live off base. Wouldn't they be the most at risk for trouble or whatever?

I don't think so. Most of the Airmen living off base party at home. You have to be a Senior Airman or above to live off base too.

And I don't think it will affect Misawa that bad because most base housing gets filled up as a rule. In some cases, people are WAITING for on base housing. (Misawa has some nice cribs)

Ya well Kadena housing is about to undergo a $100,000,000 - $250,000,000 rennovation. With that kind of coin there should be some banging cribs available soon. While in Okinawa 8,000 service people and their families are going to be moved to Guam over the next 10 years to the tune of 6billion from the US and 7billion from Japan. Okinawa is definitely going to have some vacancies.

I've also heard that service people are going to be moved around from Europe to Asia.

Hrmm... if that's the case, it might be a good idea to look into opening a photo studio in Okinawa! Woo!

Sorry to threadjack... But do any of you know how/where to buy airmen gear on the cheap ?

Searching for old style (80' early 90') helo or anything else pilot helmets. Anykind of unclassified cockpit part (broken switch or panels, post 9/11 they became a bitch to find, like if some camel jockey was going to rebuild a working F16 out of broken parts... but before you could even buy full airframe section from crashed/damaged planes).

I'm back to my highschool hobby of building simulator cockpits...

I don't think there are many people bitching about this new policy. Most of my friends are living on base. The few who do live off the base's do so to get the full experience of living in Japan. They enjoy making friends with neighbors, and trying to do things the Japanese way. I know from them that they are not being forced to move back on base. I'm told its just starting with people moving here now. On a side not the local landlords are not stupid, and they know what the rent caps are, and they always charge the max per rank. Whilst local national will pay much less. Very smart move if you ask me, but I'm sure they will be disappointed about this more than the service members.

I wonder what is going on with housing at Camp Zama and Atsugi (Army / Navy). When I lived there in 1991 to 1993, you couldn't live off base, even if you wanted to. There was lots of military housing, including large single family homes.

The last time I went by Zama (2006), it looked like the Chapel Hill housing area had been given back to the City of Zama but the base had a new tower for military families.

It seems that gaijin kids living in Yokota Air Base committed a crime in Inadaira, Musashimurayama, suburb of Tokyo in August. These Yokota gaijin kids sticked a rope over road and bike-riding woman hit it and suffered head injury.

Dont commit crimes in even my peaceful neighborhood, damn gaijins.

Takechanpoo, perhaps you are referring to a different article. Did you post the wrong link, or did you just make up parts of the story? The article you posted only says some people reported seeing suspicious foreigners in the area around the time of the accident. Nothing about the air base or children. The police have no idea who tied the rope, according to this article.

Thanks. Yes, that article does say mostly what you claimed before, but they still have no direct evidence of who did it (claims of sightings of foreigners and apparent gaijin images on video camera). But if 2+ months after the crime, they are still attempting to analyze security cameras and fingerprints, I don't think they are going to catch the culprits. Too bad.. that poor girl cracked her skull open. Somebody needs a spanking.
