Former Japanese Nurse On Drug Smuggling Charges In Malaysia

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Nov 04, 2009 1:18 am

[floatl]Image[/floatl]AFP: Woman held over drugs
A JAPANESE woman [named as former nurse Mariko Takeuchi] faces the death penalty in Malaysia after being arrested on suspicion of trafficking 4.7 kilograms of methamphetamines, state media said on Monday. Azizah Ibrahim, customs director at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, said the 30-year-old woman was detained last Friday for possession of 'shabu' which is popular in the region. Azizah said the drug, with a street value of 1.2 million ringgit (S$489,704), was found in a special compartment in her luggage after she arrived from Dubai...[Takeuchi] has been remanded for investigation under Malaysia's tough anti-narcotics law, which stipulates a mandatory death sentence upon conviction. The death penalty is carried out by hanging in Malaysia.

Can't use the "I got it from a gaijin" excuse on this one.

Smuggling drugs in Malaysia? Gee, there are cheaper, faster, and easier ways to commit suicide.

I've visited and worked in Malaysia and nearby Singapore many times, and you do not even think about drugs in those countries. All of the countries in that area (Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc.) all have mandatory death sentences for drug smugglers. Several Australian nationals have been sentenced to death in Singapore and Indonesia, and the Australians have not been able to do anything about it, so there isn't any hope that Japanese officials would do any better.

The only remote hope she might have to save her life would be to provide some evidence that someone else planted the drugs on it without her knowledge. If she could get someone like a family member in Dubai, where her flight originated from, to admit that they planted the drugs, then it would save her life. But at the cost of having that person spend many years in jail because of the strict but less severe UAE drug laws.

No, no, no...you're wrong. It was the gaijin who put it in her luggage without her knowledge that did it. Geez Tommy, you should know Japanese hate drugs.

4.7 kilos? That's a hangin' for sure if she's found guilty. Her only chance is if the J-gov offers them a sweet deal, and that seems pretty unlikely.

One of my Japanese co-workers a while back got busted entering Singapore with 65 grams of pot and ended up spending 5 years in prison there. In his case, he was lucky he was such a dope: he'd gotten ripped off by the seller and most of what he was had was just filler. Had he actually been carrying what he thought he'd bought (about 350g), he would have been facing trafficking charges rather than just possession.

Oddly, prison seemed to be the best thing that happened to him: he got serious about his painting and wrote a book while he was in there. The year before his release he actually petitioned to have his sentence extended.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.

Though I got to admit that the last time I was in Malaysia, I brought back 400mg of drugs I picked at the local pharmacy for my gaijin friend living in Tokyo.

FYI, this drug is sold legally in Japan but they tend to be very expensive from what I have heard (not really sure exactly how much because I never had to take them). ;)

But, he was already hung before you left and he doesn't have to take them either, but they do make for a lovely dessert.....

She doesn't even have that...as the article points out, conviction is a mandatory death penalty.
I guess she was lucky not to be caught in Singapore, where they might whip you first before they hang you.
She's a goner.

I don't know...if the death sentence in Malaysia is carried out by hanging, judging from the picture of Ms. Takeuchi, there's always the chance the rope might break...

Just did a quick look-see, and it turns out that the J media is indeed covering the story.

Video and short article on FNN news
(Apparently they don't hide faces or handcuffs on Malaysian TV, but the J news folks made sure to do a J-porn type tracking mosaic of the handcuffs)

Variation of the same story on Sankei news (MSN)
