Japan Times: The fatally flawed math of risking it all in Japan
...I am greatly saddened to write that my Japanese wife of nearly 17 years is currently engaged in an affair that has intensified over the past year. She and her once-divorced infatuate text sweet nothings. They meet up after work and on weekends. Heck, he has driven to our home to pick her up! My two older children, ages 12 and 9, have even told me that they and their 5-year-old brother have been taken along on a date and frightened into secrecy, causing the 9-year-old to privately exclaim, "I hate that man!" Imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon a bag filled with toothbrushes, body sponges and hairbrushes, many in plastic wrappings revealing the name of a love hotel they apparently frequent. Why would someone even bring that stuff home? Imagine my surprise when I discovered that she had "lent" this man \7.7 million to cover his gambling losses, setting up an informal repayment plan than extends into 2017...more...

Wow, my first reaction was "snuff that bitch and snuff the fucker banging your wife." But after reading along he seems like he is kind of at fault for letting the fire go out of the relationship and is kind of a sorry excuse for a man who can't control his own marriage. It seems his love for his children makes him put up with this torture and honestly, good for him, I am sure most guys would rather dump the kids on her and get out of Japan. I feel for this guy and hope that as soon as the children are old enough he can look for someone else.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

I can't help but think that if he had signed his name to the article that someone might have helped the guy out a bit.

Man, I think this story is BS. "seen walking hand in hand about the neighborhood with another man" is BS. I almost never saw Japanese couples doing that. The only time maybe would be christmas eve after dusk! And young couples only. Not middle aged ones!

"You're a gaijin! This is my country, not yours! I'm Japanese!" A good counter for this would be to get his Japanese citizenship. If your married for more than 3 years to a Japanese spouse you only need to have lived in Japan for 1 year continuously before applying!

Still won't change...Savoie had Japanese citizenship and look where it got him.

My advice: Hire a PI, get film of her fucking around, sue the other man and then use the same evidence to prove she's an unfit mother to gain custody of the kids. Then, start thinking about Japanese citizenship, or take the kids home (and, for god's sake, don't let mum "just take them back to Japan for the holidays...")

My counter to that has been, "Just like a Japanese to think small. Be thankful I see fit to let you live in my world."

that sounds like an excellent plan to me but i'm hardly a strategist when it comes to these types of situations.

i hope the poor guy is lurking fg.

Although I'm not sure the J-legal system ever was involved until he did a snatch and grab in Fukuoka.

This letter just seems fishy, though. It reads like one of Debito's "Here's one of my anonymous acquaintances who's suffered unimaginably outrageous outrages at the hands of xenophobic Japanese and their racist system, in ways that just happen to segue neatly into one of my cookie-cutter soapbox rants!" editorials. In trying to make the wife look as monstrous as possible, he ends up making himself look like a dishrag caricature.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.
