60 out of 100 is a passing score in Korea?!
Sheesh ... it's 90 out of 100 here.

This seems like a monumentally bad idea... I wonder how many 10's of thousands of $s she's going to have to spend on passing the practical test. And how many people are going to have to die.

I am sure there was a good reason for her to not get a driver's license. I will try to stay off the road while I'm in Korea the next time.

Good idea anyway. Have you seen the way people drive there? I remeber on one 5 day holiday to Seoul I saw nine traffic accidents.

I suppose very similar to Japan. I still think Asians, in general, are the worst driver on earth. They have the worst hand-to-eye coordination.

There really needs to be a cut-off number of tests you can take before you are just denied a driver's license for good. If her learning curve for that simple test is too slow, then when she gets into actual traffic she'll be disasterous, as an even steeper learning curve to handle real situations in real time will be necessary, but sorely lacking.

I have seen any number of farmers in the backwoods of Ehime who have almost certainly never bothered to get a license and they are not generally inherently unsafe drivers for themselves. How much damage can you really do running into a guard rail at 10kph? The problem come when you are stuck behind them on a narrow goat path with shoulders that are just wide enough to tempt you to do something really stupid.

Folks, read the article carefully! This was just her WRITTEN test. She has not even tried the actual driving test yet.

I suspect her real problem is illiteracy. She probably can't read the test and just had to keep circling items at random until by luck she happened to score 60%.

Excellent deduction! You could be right about that. But if that is the case, isn't that likely to cause a few problems with road signage?

If I was driving in Korea I'd be very afraid right now, and praying that she doesn't pass her road test.

It's interesting to note the differences in the Japanese and Korean testing systems. In addition to the difference in passing scores (90/100 vs. 60/100), in Japan they make sure you can drive via several tests* before you're allowed to take the written exam. So the process is backwards.

* Speciifically: 1) the instructor has to sign off that you're ready to take the provisional license test, 2) the provisional license test, 3) the instructor signs off that you're ready to take the final driving test, and 4) the final driving test. There's also a written test for the provisional license, and pre-tests to assure that you're ready to take both the provisional and final written tests. After all of this you'd think that Japanese drivers would be the best in the world ...

Plausible theory...but f*ck...in the time it takes to allegedly fail the test 950 times you could have at least mastered basic literacy in way less time.

I was thinking the same thing but illiteracy is pretty rare in ROK

Yokohammer, it just goes to show that having a bunch of relatively strict tests really does nothing to improve people's driving ability. I think the reason North American drivers may generally be better is people spend more time behind the wheel.

Yup. Experience really is the best teacher.

Also, parts of the Japanese education system, driving schools included, seem to be geared more towards passing tests than acquiring actual proficiency.

I'm hoping medical schools are different ...

Isn't that basically what all medical schools are for? You study to pass the medical exam, then you do an internship to learn how to actually be a doctor. And you aren't even really responsible for all that much until you finish residency.
