The Ultimate FG - Bill Murray?

Postby bejiita » Fri Jul 11, 2003 11:56 am

Just saw a preview on the TV for Lost in Translation starring Bill Murray. It looked pretty decent with him as a FG. Too bad they don't have an online trailer yet.

Looks good. Can't believe they picked Matthew as one of the Japanese talent for the show...

Hey, this does look good. Seems like they're portraying a bit of real Japan with gentle humor. And the use of real Japanese people makes it much more tolerable. Let's hope it leaves the Mr. Baseball/Black Rain-type of cliches out of the movie.

Pigeon English/Chinese title for a J-movie?!

"Black Rain" was painful to watch many parts [[excluding Matsuda's final role as the creepy and sadistic villain]].

Mr. Baseball 'better' because it had few nanograms of reality about how much Japanese baseball sucks.

BUT how could you forgot the "best"!?
The 1986 Micheal Keaton movie, Gung Ho... Pigeon English/Chinese title for a J-movie?!

Hey, what's wrong with "Mashu"? He's a bona fide Japanese talento, he's on TV all the time. So putting someone like that in the movie makes it completely realistic, like Bill Murray really is in Japan to promote whiskey.

By the way, what's your beef with Mashu? He's a weirdo, but not nearly as objectionable as someone like that sleazebag, Tamori. :x

Tamori is not a sleazeball. He just wears sunglasses like a sleazeball. I think you have an issue with sunglasses. You should get that checked out.

Matthew (Takashi Fuji) is one of the funniest new talents out in the last few years. Actually I should say Takashi Fuji, as his "normal" self is funnier than Mattew usually is.....

For those not in Japan: Tamori wears sunglasses because his left eye is spastic and moves around randomly. Unlike Gov Blinky's mental illnesses, for Tamori this was caused by a birth deflect.

Yes, Taro, that is correct. This rather uncommon birth "deflect" resulted in Tamori shooting out of the womb and poking his eye on the doctor's cigarette. The rest is history and Tamo should be paying the doctor instead of the other way 'round.

Life is full of ironies.

   birth deflect!

This makes me think of that commercial where a kid is shot out of the womb in the delivery room and flies out the window and he flies through the air for years until he grows old and he finally lands in a grave.

As for this movie. Sofia Coppola....WOW. I didn't know she was following her father. She also did "The Virgin Suicides".

This movie looks great. If you can laugh at a 2 second shot on a trailer, it bodes well for the movie. This movie will speak volumes to expats who understand the language and the quirks of Japan.

As for Mr Baseball. I LOVE THAT MOVIE. It's cool. Never seen Gung Ho and Black Rain was ok.

By the way Taro. After 8 years of living in Japan and 3 out, i FINALLY know why Tamori wears those sunglassses. My wife couldnt even tell me.

Is the eye thing the "lon-pari"* lazy eye thing.

* Lon-pari is a priceless Japanese slang for somebody who appears to have one eye towards London and one towards Paris. I laughed out loud when I heard it used the first time. It is a fairly common eye complaint in all parts of the world and due to a defect in the occular muscles.

For the record:

Black Rain, I did not like it because the general American superiority complex all these movies suffer from. People are people and Americans are as much a result of their environment as Japanese are of theirs.

What's the term for a western born Japanese, Nishi? If you have ever met any of these people they are as American as you and I, they act like us, talk like us and look like them.

So it's almost for sure this will be anothor Black Rain, Mr Baseball movie. Where we act all god-like and laugh at the rest of the world.

Lon-pari 'plus alpha'

Tamori's eye thing is bit more disconcerting than plain static Lon-pari. Tamori's eye will jerk around independently like an african chameleon. I've meet him a few times and sitting next to him in a coffee shop it's too tempting to look at what the hell is going on with his eye. Japanese people are FAR too polite to ever mention it (and deeply ashamed that the shoddy Japanese medical system has not tried to treat such conditions until recently).

Gai: You're right that I have an issue with Tamori's sunglasses (but I don't have an issue with sunglasses in general). However, knowing what we know about Tamori's lazy eye (thanks to Taro), it's a lot easier to cut Tamori some slack. I always thought Tamori was trying too hard to look "cool", when it fact it made him look like a sleazy oyaji.

AmerOyaji: Mr. Baseball sucked. Gung Ho sucked worse--maybe the worst stereotyping of Japan/US relations ever. Black Rain scores some points for getting Ridley Scott's magic touch (even though I've never quite agreed with the portrayal of Japan as reality's answer to "Blade Runner").

Query: Is Mashu gay?

really? yeah, really!

Postby stevemcgee99 » Wed Jul 30, 2003 7:12 pm

To make it clear how pathetic I really am, I was not totally sarcastic, I only tried to jeeringly make my sincere statements with a somewhayt sarcastic, overstated tone- the way a shy adolescent might when complementing his friend.

So, rest assured, I am not Josh- although I once lived with a Borderline/Narcisistic kid named Josh. The last roomate I've had that I didn't call "girlfriend" (and didn't pay more rent than me...)
