As the health care debate rages in the US, Tokyo lawmakers set a maximum waist size. Are you too fat for Japan?

Sure it counts for FG. A few years ago I had the annual health check, and my waistline was way over. A few weeks later a nurse from the health dept. came to my house and basically berated my wife for me being overweight. She also hinted that in the future health insurance might be canceled if people didn't follow the guidelines.
Now I will admit, I was overweight and putting myself at risk of many problems. So I began to exercise and eat less and dropped 17kg, or 35 lbs.
But I when I went to last year's health check I was still metabo, according to the waistline measurement. Now that is a crock of sh#t. I am now 162lbs, and I'm 5'4, but according to their measurements I'm overweight.

canman, unless you are very muscular that is overweight for 5'4". I should be under 162 and I'm 5'8" (Way over, btw).

Anyway, this idea of using waist size and only waist size is stupid. Is a healthy waist size the same for canman, me, and AO (6'10"?)? A friend of mine gets shit-faced drunk almost every night, smokes like a chimney, and usually eats a bowl of tonkotsu ramen around midnight on the way home. However, he's very skinny (my height and about 125 lbs or 173 cm and 57 kg). Should he be considered healthier than someone who's a few cm over the waist-size limit, doesn't smoke and drinks moderately?

And why the fuck are women allowed to have bigger waists? That's absolutely ridiculous.

holy crap. in addition to that being nothing short of a gross invasion of privacy, i think it's a complete waste of medical resources - that or i was completely unaware that we currently have a surplus of medical staff with time to kill.

If they really want to save on healthcare, they should start making all of these old fuckers actually pay.

Now, if they were really serious about healthcare costs for wrinklies, I say euthanize!

Which is pretty funny cause I had a friend who got berated for just that. They should really look at body fat percentages more than waist size or body weight.

Samurai_Jerk wrote:And why the fuck are women allowed to have bigger waists? That's absolutely ridiculous.

Women are supposed to have higher body fat percentages and bigger hips than men.

You can be skinny and unhealthy very easily. I've also heard some suggestion that healthy fat people have a longer life expectancy than healthy skinny people.

Basically, waist size is only a guideline with "enforcement" left up to Jalanese companies. For example at Mitsubishi and Hitachi, you can get a waver by taking water tank fat ratio test if you are tall or muscular. No big whoop.
The waist size law is mostly being usied by Japanese companies to get rid of deadwood/older-employees/butthead- bucho (depending on your point of view).

With this guy's skill set I don't think his company would care if he was as big as Jabba the Hut... ;) It was the woman at the health center who berated him because his weight had increased from the previous year (a lot more muscle mass).

I've heard similar stories from several people. All that matters to these jackasses is BMI. A guy like Arnold would be morbidy obese.

Hmm, this reminds me of a physical checkup I had a few years ago when working at a large Japanese corporation.
The company doctor reviewed the results of my physical and said, "Oh, what's this, you got a B for your BMI". But then he took a look at me and said, "Ah, but you work out at the gym so I'll bump you up to an A so you've got straight A's now, ho ho".
When is the J govt going to realize that waist size and BMI mean nothing?
And the concept of fining or berating people for being over an arbitrary limit just boggles the mind.

BMI does mean something for the majority of people who are fairly sedentary, it just has to be applied by an intelligent doctor.

What percentage of people do you think are too cock diesel for BMI to be accurate? Less than ten?

I believe that at least 99% of people with high BMI have it because of fat, not muscle.

What is the attraction of carrying around extra fat on one's body? It's totally unnecessary!

Never been in the military, so I have to rely on an uncle who was in the Marines for stories of good times in uniform. He said that they'd whip out some calipers to measure your gut and if you failed, they'd send you to a "pig farm" for a couple of weeks of intensive rehabilitation.

What about a really hot anime character? Would that have increased your girth and/or length? Have any you fellas ever popped a boner from looking at anime characters?

That would be right. But the only "Pig Farm" I knew was a whorehouse/bar outside of Johnson AB that had an audience participation strip show on the manita.

"cock diesel", that's awesome, gonna use it next chance i get:)

id say say less than 10% sounds right, thinking about the tiny number of colleagues/ friends who do ANY exercise, and only a smallish percent of exercisers will put on significant muscle.

I'm 180cm and 90kgs and the most "cock diesel" person i tend to see in a week, i got rated as "tending to fatness" by the Jdoc...
