Have a drink and smile!

Postby Shibuya Me » Tue Jul 29, 2003 4:08 pm

Just a question...

I wonder where a bloke like me
can go to meet beautiful girls,
have a cheap drink, and just
shoot the shit with a bunch of
real good people?

Yes...that's right. I am from the
midwest....

Anyway, I just want to have fun
and meet Japanese girls
who don't want me just for
my millions!

Any advice?

Here is some advice. Take a gun, point it at your balls and and pull the trigger for all its worth. Your millions will be saved and you will also get some work done.

Calm down, Gai. Just ignore the tempting FOB gaijin posts.
The flame wars are driving people away- why are you here? Don't you want to have conversations? Before you flame me back, take a break. Read the new Waiwai http://mdn.mainichi.co.jp/waiwai/index.html or something, and get mad at the Mainichi instead.

Well, try doing what the Japanese do- sign up for English classes somewhere and nanpa away! If that fails, squat outside a conbini and chat up everyone who comes by. Neither require much Japanese language skill.

There are plenty of "gaijin bars" in Shinjuku and Shibuya, (I am not a big Roppongi fan, but have only been there once). It takes a little exploration, but there are literally hundreds all over the country. I am more down with the Kobe/Osaka area, but Tokyo has IT ALL.

Go find Kanto Walker, Time Out Tokyo, Japanzine or any other guide that will be lying around every place foreigners frequent, and look for the English adverts. Try one or two a week bars/restaurants/clubs until you find a place that has the vibe you want. Those magazines are a good starting point- ask the gaijin you meet along the way for other places.

Wow. Thanks for the advice!

But isnt there a place people
go to that is just popular?

A good friendly place that
everyone knows about?

Word of mouth sort of thing?

Great burgers and fries?

Cole slaw under a hundred
yen?

A place I can bring all my
friends on a Friday night?

a great place to hang with my friends.

That's all.

Not looking to bang any beautiful women after my
first drink...just looking for a bar stool..
a friendly atmosphere....and such.

It means your question comes up every month or so, posted by some random newbie-to-Japan who couldn't be bothered to do a little research on his own.

I know you mean no harm. But how hard could it be to type "Tokyo bars" (or whatever city) into Google and go from there?

Moreover, how hard could it be to just walk around a little and wander into whatever establishment looks like fun?

Postby Shibuya Me » Tue Jul 29, 2003 5:52 pm

Wow.

Well. I see your point.

I just assumed that this was a friendly site
and I could ask some people who have live
here for a long time.

Word of mouth seems best when looking
for a restaurant or bar.

Well. Okay. Point well taken.

Thank you.

Tokyo is a huge city and there is no one place that everybody hangs out. There is something for everybody but remember it will not be the same as home.

I doubt you will find coleslaw anywhere. But if you want to find the same places you are familiar with, then there is a Tony Roma's, there is a Hard Rock Cafe, there is Zest, and there is TGIF.

But you should take advantage of the fact that you are in a new country and experience new things. People tend to hang out at Izakaya's.. there are thousands of them. There are also heaps of Irish pubs and places like the Hub.

Oh, look at that. You made me feel all guilty about possibly hurting your feelings. I just think things seem more fun when you discover them for yourself. (And my advice was just the curt, totally unfriendly version of Gomi's "But you should take advantage of the fact that you are in a new country and experience new things.")

Okay, ffffffine. Party pooper. How about Yonchome Cafe in Koenji? Casual, cozy, and you can even order coleslaw. They're open from 11:30am to 2am and sell alcohol, so it's as much a bar as it is a diner. There are a lot of live houses in the area, and people like to go there after a show.

Just don't everyone go at once or I'll have to smack you.

I was pulling an all nighter last night.. ah the joys of deadlines and working with nightowl engineers in 3 timezones!!

I was using the board as therapy when it was all getting too much so I had no energy for my usually witty retorts...

I was feeling generous and not trying to show anybody up. But yes it was a newbie question which I usually ignore unless I am trying to look busy for the troops.

Damn I am raving.. psychosis is setting in and I have a cramp in my neck from not moving my head for 6 hours.. anyone want to drop by and give me a neck rub will be lavished with... well... um... something. Can't think straight at present.

An easy chaeap place to hang out with friends? In summer I always like the beer gardens. I am sure there are some in Tokyo. It isn't a bar, but usually a flat rate, like 3500 yen for all you can eat, all you can drink. Usually on the roof of a department store, it can be an great excuse to start drinking at noon...

... but it sounds like you may not want any more advice.

I wonder. What deep issues you have that you feel the need to try
to belittle people with your 1.5 wit?

Why not just ignore the forum all together if you do not want to answer me?

Why bother clicking on the link to tell me that you will not give me the answer?

Do you think that this makes you look smart? Do you think all of your other friends think...." Wow! I guess he made that new member look really stupid"

If this is what you need to do just to feel good about yourself...then I feel sorry for you. And furthermore, when any newbie asks a question that I have heard a million times before...I am going to do the right thing and give them the correct answer. Because they are NEW!

I do not have the need to click on a link just to tell someone " Hey! I have no dickie and I am not giving you the answer."

But that's just me.....the NEW Member!

Okay Dickie? Do I make myself clear SWEETHeart?

Now that is what an old member of this site said to a new member so he could seem like he is really cool. Did not work.

Wow, I had no idea I'd piss you off so much. Indeed, what *is* with this dickie nonsense? Get a grip. It's making you look insane. (And as a matter of fact, I *don't* have a dickie. It would be weird if I did.)

My first post was sort of paraphrasing that of another member, so I don't know why you're picking on *me*. I wasn't trying to belittle you. I really did feel guilty, hence the second post.

   This whole thread is just bizarre.

Dude, go to a beer garden like Naniwan Kid suggests. They are great in the summertime. Head over to Roppongi and try the zillions of bars. Everyone may not "know your name", but you can drink cheaply with your friends. Then trip over to Ebisu and Shibuya and try another zillion bars. Then go to Shinjuku and do the same thing.

The cheap places are not going to be featured on a website, but TokyoQ and Metropolis will have good reviews for upscale, cool looking bars all over the place--Tokyo Q even has a rating system.

In Osaka we have Kansai Walker (in Japanese) and Kansai Time Out (in English) that are good sources. I am sure there are similar and probably more sources in Tokyo. I know there is a Tokyo Walker.

In Osaka "Kansai Walker" is available at Kinokuniya.
