Why do Japanese tomatoes suck so bad?

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Sun Nov 15, 2009 4:59 pm

I'm talking about the fruit not the titties. Seriously. Why is it so hard to get a good tomato here? And don't tell me about some amazing thousand yen individually wrapped rip-off you bought in the basement of a department store or the old lady with the farm down the road in the inaka shithole you live in who grows the best tomatoes in the world. I'm talking about the regular tomatoes you buy at the grocery store.

The green peppers here suck too. Fucking bitter as hell.

Yeah, for some reason Japanese cherry tomatoes are good.

Japanese breed for cosmetics and not for taste. This is so obvious. Its one of the main reasons that Japanese hamburgers taste like shit. They have no clue of the complimentary tastes. Measure the fucking furaneol level in the tomatoes here .. that would be a starting point.

I don't know, I 've had a couple breed me that didn't taste too bad. However, you're spot on about the burgers...

Growing your own produce is one of the major benefits of having your own home. Tomatoes in particular are a hundred times better when they are home grown. Green peppers on the otherhand, I have never had much luck with growing.

Aren't many tomatoes in Japan grown in hydroponic operations?
Hydroponics is now well established in Japan, particularly for vegetables such as cucumbers, melons, tomatoes, lettuce, honeworts, strawberries, radish sprouts, leeks and green Welsh onions. One of the most remarkable applications of hydroponics is a computerized NFT system in the Daiei supermarket which is located in Funabashi City at the Lalaport Shopping Center, one of the largest in Asia. Starting from scratch (seed!) in the back of the store, the product makes its way as it grows until it reaches the customer up front. Only four technicians control the entire process.

The tomatoes are just ass shite in Korea, they don't have "volcanic shit" to blame it on. I don't so much think it is the soil, but rather the method by which they are grown. Hydroponics suck for tomatoes. Besides, does any japanese native know what a tomato is supposed to taste like? You mean there weren't meant to be white and pasty?

Yeah, it has to be the hydroponics. Same goes for green leafy stuff like spinach. I mean, they grow the stuff in sheets of plastic with the roots dangling in a chemical solution, using artificial lighting in many cases. Out where I'm at people grow their vegetables in soil and sunshine, and there's no comparison. Supposedly the bacteria in the soil are necessary, as well as the nutrients. Everything just tastes so much better than the insipid crap you often get at supermarkets in the cities. Although I'm sure that if you find a market that specializes in organically grown produce you might be pleasantly surprised. There seem to be quite a few markets of that sort springing up in urban areas, I guess because other people are noticing the difference as well. I think there are also soil-and-sunshine growers that sell online. Might be worth a try if you're serious about your vegetables.
