Hit-and-Run Suspect Held At US Base

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Nov 11, 2009 2:06 pm

Asahi: U.S. serviceman in hit-and-run
Okinawa Prefecture--A U.S. serviceman is in custody at a base here after an apparent hit-and-run that killed a Japanese civilian, the U.S. Army in Okinawa said Tuesday. The U.S. commander, Col. James E. Woodard, told Yomitan Mayor Keizo Yasuda the suspect was in custody at the U.S. Army Garrison Torii Station. He said the U.S. military would cooperate with Japanese authorities. Masakazu Hokama, 66, was found dead with blood on his head in a wooded area Saturday, according to prefectural police. The vehicle had a broken windshield. It was seized at a repair shop 4 kilometers from where the body was found, police sources said. Police identified the military member from a signature left in the shop, the sources said. On Tuesday, police searched the serviceman's apartment.

I was waiting in the reception at the doctor's office Monday morning watching NHK news along with all the useless seniors citizens clogging up the medical system. As soon as this story came on they started looking at me uncomfortably out of the corner of their eyes.

The 27-year-old staff sergeant at the Torii communication station in Yomitan, Okinawa, has also refused to face Japanese investigators unless video recording of the interrogation is permitted, his lawyer, Toshimitsu Takaesu, said.

Yeah, good luck with that.

If he knew he had hit someone, he would not have brought his car to the shop, he told Takaesu.

How do you not realize that you hit someone, I notice when I hit a misquito.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

Maybe because you were shit-faced drunk when you were driving. Seriously, this is the best part:

According to Takaesu, the serviceman told him that he returned to his apartment in Yomitan in the early morning of Nov 7. After waking up, he noticed the windshield of his car was broken with blood stains on it, so he brought the car into a repair shop.

If he knew he had hit someone, he would not have brought his car to the shop, he told Takaesu.

So your windshield is mysteriously broken and bloodied over night while your car sits parked at home and the first thing you do upon discovering it is run to the repair shop? Yeah, that story sounds legit.
