The big deal is that some people are making such a big deal out of it. The nitpicking that pols get into, both in Japan and the US, is f*cking pathetic. So the guy bowed and shook hands at the same time! BFD! Boy, that's really going to affect world politics and worsen the economic situation and damage the environment and hasten the nuclear destruction of the planet and ... utter bullshit. There are serious issues to be dealt with that sort of take precedence over the exact number of degrees Obama bowed when greeting the emperor.

On the other hand, the fact that people are pouncing on stupid little details like this actually means there's nothing more serious to complain about.

I gotta agree with you on that Hammer. I'm far from being on the Obama band wagon, but he's kind of fucked if he does and fucked if he doesn't with these things. They raised all sorts of hell about his and Michelle My Belle's breeches of etiquette when they met with the Queen and then with his bow to the Saudi King. Now him with the Emperor. It would also appear that the camera snaps that the photographers select are edited for the most controversy.

If Obama kowtows to Hatoyama's Futemba relocation promise, then the Repubs might have something to squawk about.
