I was in a yakitori-ya the other night and they had the big BN sign up. Without any negativity I commented that the stuff is really popular in Japan. The mama said, "Yeah, but I don't know why. It doesn't really taste that good." Then at another bar the master said, "It's only popular in Japan because Japanese people like events." It would seem a lot of the people selling it know that it's crap.

Good point SJ. How many times have you seen it with the J-people that they just must attend a show or event to say they have been there, done that and got the Tee shirt. But, having said that we're probably not to much differant in that regard. I know I used to join my J-friends and colleagues for the arrival parties before, I had to admit to myself it really was cow piss. Now, I will definately say pass on the BN.

I have no problem drinking piss booze at a big party. It's the way people keep drinking it during the season and feel like it's classy because it's French that cracks me up. As my French friend who used to be a wine importer once said, "We have a 2000 year tradition of making wine in France. But most people just drink shit to get drunk."

If you're looking for a soundtrack to go with your drinking, may I recommend "Beaujolais the Beat" by the 3rd best band to come out of the Pacific North West, the Fastbacks. (1. sonics 2. mudhoney)

For instructions on how to make your own Beaujolais:

Personally, as far as the screw-top/cork controversy, I feel that wine of quality can only came in a plastic bag.

poor stuff

Postby canman » Sun Nov 19, 2006 5:35 pm

A friend of mine a bar owner and somewhat of a wine connisseur told me a couple of interesting things. First off he said the wine that was shipped to Japan, is of a lower grade than the stuff kept in France or for the rest of Europe, and that the wine that is flown over tastes like crap. Its the wine that has time to sit in the bottles for a while, making its way over by ship, that tastes much better. But don't tell that to Japanese people, its time for, " Let's Beaujolais".

It's funny this stuff...

Recently came back from Japan's wine making region, Kofu and Yamanashi ken, and I asked them what wine they recommended.

They still said Beaujolais Nouveau even though they had new bottles of the regionally stuff! I asked her why she recommended this and not the regional stuff and she said she was being promoted to sell it over the regional stuff!

Was totally surprised!
will the last one out please turn the light off.....

Plastic Beaujolais for plastic Japan.....

[floatr]Image[/floatr]
First Beaujolais shipments arrive; Aeon to serve in plastic bottles
Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008
NARITA, Chiba Pref. .japantimes.co.jp (Kyodo)--
This year's first shipment of Beaujolais Nouveau arrived Friday at Narita and other airports in Japan, with worldwide sales of the French wine set to kick off Nov. 20....
...."Although pricey bottles, including those from select farms, tended to be a topic of conversation until last year, reasonably priced standard bottles may gain popularity again this year, partly because of an economic downturn," a company official said.
On Thursday, Aeon Co. said it will offer this year's Beaujolais Nouveau at a discount, thanks to cost-cutting efforts and a strong yen.
Aeon said its "special" Beaujolais Nouveau will hit store shelves in 750-ml plastic bottles instead of glass, and priced at 1,780 yen, undercutting the average market price of 2,000 to 3,000 yen...more...

The Japanese rave about Beaujolais Nouveau as it is rather like the Japanese race. Lacking any sense of depth and needs time to mature.

Carrefour in Minami Machida sells much better wine for 1,000 Yen or less and for a couple of thousand Yen you can get a very nice deal.

This year's Beaujolais Nouveau wine spa festivities. Personally, I think I would rather drink regular onsen water.

Nasty!
But doesn't the alcohol/acid content irritate those bathers in ...uh... sensitive spots? Just looking at this photo makes me itchy.

Nah - its probably just dosed with food coloring (or photo-shopped). The acid level in there is more likely due to the yappari oyajiis relieveing themselves in a drunken stupour. As for any itching thats probably result of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa which amazingly common in the Japanese untreated common bathing places.

Two questions:
1) Why is the minor allowed to bathe in wine (on the assumption that it will consume at least some alcohol).
2) What happens if the kid pees, as frequently happens in kiddie pools?

Shhh. Don't tell everyone...if people know we do that, too, we won't be able to always blame it on the kids.
Still, I have to admit, peeing probably improves the flavor of Beaujolais....

Just invite bunch of ladies while they are on their period and you got yourself a private Beaujolais party. I probably won't recommend a party with a bunch of pissed off girls though.

I France the tradition is to bath premature born babies in wine to make them healthy... (should have done that... /bleh...)
