Going to Guam to get divorced

Postby (1VB)freels » Sun Nov 22, 2009 7:30 pm

I was wondering if anyone has done this before. I really could use any and all info that you have. I am looking to give myself a Christmas present this year and I want to know anyone's experiances. Hope to hear some positives and negatives.

Okay, I don't get it. Is your wife Japanese? If so, than you need to get the agreement of your wife and do the paperwork at the local city office in Japan. I don't think going to Guam is going to change anything.

I have to make it legal for the Navy. The only way is to do it in the U.S. or territory. Yes she is JN and I already filled out that green paper already. But I wanted to get a U.S. one and what better place then in Guam.

Well in that case, Guam is the closest and cheapest place to get it done.

Don't you have to get divorced in the state that you got married in?

Not if you're in the military

Seems like I went through that on one of my divorces (don't remember which one), but the military requirement then was that you had to submit with your Japanese divorce paperwork, a translation of the state divorce requirements from your home of record that were applicable to the category of divorce for which you were filing under Japanese law. Then submit the finalized divorce paperwork to the military following the court approval.

Most J-divorces are for the most administratively easy category, the equivalent of "Incompatibility," although for some reason, mine always seemed to have the word adultery included somewhere therein.

I'm sure adultery must have been on your papers, because I would have strong suspicions if there were a Japanese litigant accused of any sort of adult behavior....
