Japan Wants to Host World Cup

Postby Mulboyne » Fri Nov 27, 2009 2:27 pm

Japan has confirmed its candidacy to host the World Cup football tournament in 2018 or 2022. They will go up against Russia, England, Indonesia, USA, Australia and joint bids by Belgium & Netherlands and Portugal & Spain. In addition, Qatar and South Korea are bidding for 2022 alone. The host for the 2022 Cup will not be chosen from the same continent as the winning country for 2018. Japan had put forward its candidacy earlier this year but there had been speculation that the new administration might not support the application, in particular because the bidding is one of the most hotly contested. A final decision will be made by FIFA in December 2010.

I tend to agree with you, but I'd still like to see it.
Japan's gotta be up with the world's best when it comes to hosting major international sporting events. It always does an outstanding job and the hospitality can't be beaten.

It's not that simple. 2010 will be in South Africa and 2014 will be in Brazil. The reason there are so many European countries bidding is that it's on the cards FIFA will give it to Europe in 2018. That would rule out Europe for 2022 and FIFA will probably want it back in Asia before long so the question is, where in Asia? Only Indonesia and South Korea are there so far but Australia might count as a representative of Oceania which isn't geographically convenient but is in the right time zone for Asia. FIFA could skip Asia but it's a market they want to develop so one of the 2002 Cup hosts might well have a chance.

You guys were lucky....if it had gone to a vote then, the kimchees would have won. Japan did really well to get the final.
Unlike Japan, which used its money to build loads of decent stadiums in the middle of nowhere, the kimchees used their money to pay referees and made it all the way to a semi-final!!!!

Not true at all, as FIFA records show. FIFA President Joao Havelange favoured Japan as a single host and Japan thought they had it in the bag. They stopped lobbying other members who became increasingly uncomfortable with the position of both countries. Thus they moved to support UEFA boss Lennart Johansson's recommendation for co-hosting. He had warned of the dangers of awarding the Cup to one or the other. It was the attitude of both Japan and Korea which then convinced FIFA members that it was unwise to award it to a single host. Japan probably had the better bid but it wasn't Korea who pressed for a joint bid, they wanted to win the bidding outright.

That would depend on your definition of what "Outstanding" is!

Actually Australia is in the Asian qualifying group for the WC and apparently are the bookies favourites. Counting against them is FIFA's onerous hosting requirements means the other football codes will need to be very accommodating for Australia to be able to host the finals.

I think England will get it in 2018 and the USA in 2022 as Mexico the only other CONCACAF country bidding has backed out.
One problem Australia faces is the FIFA stadium requirements. FIFA requires 9-12 stadiums with a minimum capacity of 40,000. The final game (and I think the opening game) must be held in a stadium with 80,000 capacity. Only one city is allowed to have multiple (two) stadiums.
I think it 2022 is too soon for Japan or Korea.
