I have always been baffled by these security checks. Obviously tight security for boarding passengers is critical. But I have never figured out what they are trying to accomplish by checking for ID in the public areas of the airport.

On the other hand, despite what the article says, I have never found it to be a "hassle". I swear I have never waited more than 20 seconds either at the JR train exit or the automobile entrance. The check is very fast (and hence, probably pointless), and there seem to be enough officers to handle the crowds without a line forming at all.

When I went through I thought the check I thought it was completly unnecessary not that it was a hassle and it only held me up for just a few seconds. But when I am just getting off a train, why should I have to show some sort of identification? Especially for those who are just meeting friends or family at the airport. I am not sure, but do those who take buses, taxis, or cars have to show their ID if they get dropped off at the airport?
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

I've never thought it was a hassle, but it does seem like a waste: they don't check the ID thoroughly and I can tell them anything I want for why I'm there.

It's been so long since I've gone by bus that I've forgotten, do they check ID on people coming in by other means?

You go through a check point coming into the airport off the freeway. However, I heard on the radio this morning that they were also considering eliminating that check point at the same time as well.

The train and vehicle checkpoints were from the anti-airport demos at its enception. Like some many bureaucratic things in government, they have been continued because nobody thought to eliminate them after their purpose was accomplished.

I feel pretty much the same as everyone else: though I always thought the checks were uselss, I never thought of them as a hassle. The only thing that's a hassle about Narita Airport is getting to the fucking place.

When I went through ...

No understanding of history. This is recent history. More to Japan than manga and maids.

Who the fuck gave me a red snot and this lovely comment, honestly this has to be a mistake. What does history have to do with what I was talking about?

It's weird what some people decided to give out bad rep for. I've gotten red dots for posting factual information and then tons of greens when I've been nasty to someone and expected to get reds.

There does seem to a phantom red snotter on the board lately. Looks as though several people have received red boogers for totally benign posts (self included). Always anonymous, of course.

Oklahoma? ... nah ...

It's a trick the Israelis use, and it seems to work pretty well for them:
The first layer of actual security that greets travellers at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion International Airport is a roadside check. All drivers are stopped and asked two questions: How are you? Where are you coming from?

"Two benign questions. The questions aren't important. The way people act when they answer them is," Sela said.
Essentially, the Israeli argument turns on profiling. The problem I see with this, besides the obvious issue of discrimination, is that even the best profiling can't possibly catch everyone. Not all would-be criminals are the nervous sweaty type, and I have a feeling that the success of Israeli security owes more to their willingness to stop and check all people of a certain "background" rather than any sort of elite psychological training.

Furthermore, even if it were possible to obtain the kind of skill necessary to effectively secure an airport through profiling, were talking about North American airport workers here. I'm not sure how it is in Canada, but in the US there seems to be some sort of affirmative-action program for the retarded.

I do, however, like the idea of removing suspected explosive devices via some sort of bomb-proof contraption, rather than evacuating the entire airport. Although, I can imagine the hell airport security would catch if their decision to not evacuate came back to bite them in the ass when a gunmen or second bomb-carrier unleashed their carnage on the mass of oblivious patrons still in queue.
