Golden Half - "Sweet Cultural Accident"

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Golden Half were a pop band of the late 60's and early 70's made up of half Japanese girls. All had foreign fathers of different nationalities - American, Spanish, Thai, Italian and German (Luna Takamura who died in 2004 of cancer). They specialized in covers of international hits with Japanese lyrics and were a fixture on variety shows of the time. Their entry on JAPATTACK says:

"...if you'd going back into history, the idol who behaves shamelessly like Christina Aguilera was also in Japan. One such group from the '70s was called 'GOLDEN HALF'...they appeared in erotic costume with the super-miniskirts to the extent that seemed to say, "We are aggressive just because we are foreigners" (playing into the Japanese fantasy of exactly how proper foreigners should behave). However, in spite of their different looks, they were loved all over Japan...Although they existed only for several years, they created an unforgettable intense trauma directly all across Japan...GOLDEN HALF are one of the most incredibly strange, but also sweet, cultural accident ever to occur in Japanese entertainment history."

The band appeared in the 1970 Meiko Kaji film Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter. Midnight Eye says:

"The film suggests that mixing the colours might well be a way to building a slightly better world, condemning the domination of one group over another...Pivotal in this regard are the frequent appearances of the all-girl pop group Golden Half...their mixed heritage being their main sales point.

Not to be confused with Golden New Half.

What a find Mulboyne. Sometimes you amaze me. Surely you don't remember the Golden Half, do you? Maria's father Frank was a USAF Sergeant at Tachikawa AB when she was born. He eventually got divorced from her mother. He was involved with the clubs on the US bases and through this, Maria got her start through the entertainment promoters for the base circuit and then came the birth of the Golden Half. They were really on top of the heap for awhile, but as the fads of entertainers go in Japan, soon faded and probably not too many people remember them today, unless they are as old as Taro. hehe

Her dad died about ten years ago, I won't say why, but since he was a pub mate of mine, I'm sure you can guess. The last I knew of Maria, she and her mother were running a fairly successful Izakaya in downtown Tokyo.

No, I don't but I should have guessed that you would. I was talking about half celebrities with a friend who did recall the group and was surprised I'd never heard of them. A quick bit of googling and the interesting story was revealed. Thanks for the extra about Maria and sorry to hear about your friend Frank. I think I might try and look out for one of their singles next time I'm in town.

Last year Hotwax Trax released a couple of great compilation albums that draw on those early 70s Nikkatsu flicks, including Sex Hunter. Lots of cool stuff by the Mops, Tamaki Hiroki, and Kaji Meiko, but unfortunately no music by Golden Half.

By a weird coincidence I've got one of the Hot Wax cds in my bag, so I'll drop a track or two on the Onkyodo show on Resonance FM tonight (Tues, 8pm to 9pm BST).

It's hard to say. That lists "Nikkatsu Roman Porno," Hair, which is not the sleezy stuff you and I have grown to love and cherish.

Most of the Nikkatsu stuff of those days wouldn't even get an "R" in today's market.

J-flicks didn't start to open up to the good stuff until much later. Those were the days that all "hair" was inked out in all skin mags and your personal copy of playboy could be seized at the airport.

You could still get layed for a five spot, but the Dark Ages were upon us in good wanking publications....

....the difference between an egg and a wank is that you can't beat a wank.
