Sounds dodgy...

GP is dodgy but the police raid sounds just as dodgy
I broke a mirror this morning, which means I should be getting 7 years of bad luck - but my lawyer says he can get me 5.

GP Bar typically serves 100 guest per evening and collect a monthly revenue of 20 million yen.
How much of that 20 million should have been paying the pizzo last month?

I agree. Certain shady men didn't get paid off.

...but anyway, it's called "Gas Panic" because the place is so small, all it takes is a fart to make everyone panic.

Oasis - Gas Panic was 12 years after the bar

I thought it was called the "Gas Panic" because it was first opened in a building without a bathroom.

(Does anybody know for certain the real story behind the name?)

I've heard a couple theories -

1) Named after the Sarin Gas Attacks - according to manager of the Shibuya bar back in 2000.

2) Named after the Oasis song of the same name - according to the Roppongi bar manager (in 2001)

Can anyone verify ? By the way, I always thought the owner was an elderly woman - at least I was introduced to someone as such, though the thousands of adult beverages along the way tend to cloud one's memories.

The person arrested was the president, not the owner, so you certainly could be correct. This guy is far too young to have been the owner since Gas Panic opened.

The Gas Panic has been around since the Bubble. It opened in the early '90s (or before but I drank away those brain cell long ago). The sarin gas attack in the Tokyo subway on March 20, 1995.

According to the Tokyo Night City by Judith Brand (Hi Jude!) is quoted by Links.net in November 2001 (Hi Chicago homeboy Justin!)
TokyoNight City - a bit of history and origins of Gas Panic. It first opened in a building without a bathroom. Hence the name?
I met her once. She's not elderly. Pretty interesting lady.

I doubt this has much to do with a lack of payment to local org crime folks. Why would they all of a sudden stop paying now? Likely it is a continuation of police activities that began on the other side of the crossing (i.e. Vanilla, Velfarre) two or three years ago.

The police officers raided GP while they completely overlooked those street swindler Nigerians overstaying without proper visas.

Hoboy, that weighty "no dancing after 1:00 AM" law is really relevant in this day and age, innit!

Looks like quite an operation. Gee, d'ya suppose the cops are actually after something else?

Few raids before the bonenkai/festive season just to remind everyone that enjoying yourself is a privilege not a right.

After all, with all that has happened this year it isn't like people need to let off a bit of steam.

Apparently they're on a rampage in Osaka. Shutting down "night clubs" left and right. Way to go Japan! Make sure to stifle the last enterprise which is sure to bring in money.

Fuck wits, seriously.

However, if those dip shits that protest Fuji Television can rise up, can't party goers? I don't expect much to change. TIJ, after all, but it can't hurt to point out how stupid the whole farce is.

This subject has cropped up a few times on FG. Notably here

Gaijin Club In Hiroshima Raided 'To Halt Dancing'

The crackdown in the eighties was inspired by the murder of a teenage girl who was picked up by her killer at an all-night disco. The original law was on the books from just after the war but the revision is more recent. It was the result a moral panic: the kind which often inspires knee-jerk legislation in many countries. Once on the books, however, the police found it a convenient pretext to boost the arrest rate and exercise control.

It's worth remembering that a number of these joints around the country have direct or indirect links to organized crime. Given the current increased efforts to isolate the yakuza financially, it's not so surprising that some are getting raided now.

Where I live, I'd say very few bars do not pay off the yaks. Certainly almost all the ones frequented by foreigners are paying protection.

no club in roppongi has that licence and i mean NOT ONE CLUB... ageha does.

flower is not a club... it is an event space... so they are ok.

note how only the FG clubs get ran down. all the FG clubs have a "Japanese Owner", but that is the royalty to the Yak overloard for the building, the other clicks running it just have territory rights for drugs and what not.

Not the first time this happened, I was working the street one night and saw GP get closed. I ran right back to the bar i was at and told the Dj to turn down the music and up the lights a bit. Customers were pissed, but shortly after that the police came (non-uniformed police... the ones that have the authority to arrest you and shut up shop) and were surpised to see that no one was dancing and that you can talk normally...

good times
:p

LOL, like how mochi and those little yogurt/pudding cups have the choking warning plastered all over them. Some random person dies and they ruin the fun for the rest of us with yet another selectively enforced law that wouldn't have prevented the original crime to begin with. All night dancing leads to murder? Bwahahahahaha

1 is a number, you know. This is a pretty lame duck excuse. I know at least one person whose joint was raided and was definitely not linked to the yaks. Maybe that's why it got raided.

The busts in Osaka are for bars that don't have a Fuzoku license full stop -- then once they get the license, they are required to stop the dancing at 1AM. From what I know, there is no license that allows all night dancing as a main event... Ageha is kind of a goliath though. Being owned by the man at USen helps. That's how it's been explained to me by a number of people.
