Johnson, Ochocinco, "Hachi Go"? Chad's next name change

Image

Yahoo Sports

According to someone who watches his broadcasts at UStream -- which I might do someday if my television is stolen, there are no books left in the world, the rest of the internet dies and a sniper is perched outside ready to kill me the second I leave my home -- Chad Ochocinco plans on changing his name again.

He made the announcement on Sunday morning before the game against the Lions. This time, the new name will be "Hachi Go," which is Japanese for "Eight Five." From ***** S. Moore at The Dugout Sports Show:

"I'm not sure how Mr. Goodell is going to take it," Ochocinco said as he held up the jersey.

But why "Hachi Go"?

A Japanese film crew was in town a couple weeks ago to do a piece on the Bengals for a NFL show over there. They said all NFL fans in Japan know who Chad Ochocinco(notes) is and they seriously made a proposal to Chad to change his last name to "Hachi Go".

"Some fans of mine that are Japanese said I should change my last name to 'Hachi Go'."

Well, by all means, if someone suggested it, you should do it. Can I be in line next? The season after "Hachi Go," I think you should be "Chad Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia." It would mean "Chad Fear of Long Words," but really, I just want to see how it looks on a jersey.

Do whatever makes you happy, man. Perhaps someday, you will get an amount of attention that you believe is enough.

At what point does one cross from just being an attention whore to being mentally ill?

What surprises me is to learn that he has Japanese friends and that there are NFL fans in Japan.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

American football is big in Japan. Many Universities have big programs. As do the jitsugyoudan teams (not as many as baseball of course), but all are culminated at season's end with the Rice Bowl. There is usually an annual exhibition game with a name University from the US collegiagte lower divisional levels, and an All Japan team.

Also, if you check BS 1 almost every evening during the season, they have NFL games (sometimes live).

It is surprisingly popular. Although not all the Universities have the football programs, the ones that do are quite large and do have scholarship programs available. Obviously, not on the level of baseball of course, but more than most people are aware of.

I've got no idea about ruggers in the states....

I played football for a tiny Japanese-owned college in the US, back in the 90s. We had a few Japanese players on our team, too. The wide receiver was surprisingly damn good, all considered. Good old Teikyo Westmar University (dead now, though). It was a nice place.
