Wendy's is far and away the best of the fast food burger joints in Kansai. Burger King in Tokyo might be better but I've never been... I don't get into Wendy's all that much as they don't have one anywhere near where I regularly go, but I always enjoy it when I get there. I'll be sorry to see them go. :(

There was(is?) one in LaLaPort, a big shopping mall in Funabashi, Chiba.

I too am sorry to see them go. I have been to the one in Ebisu on a number of occasions. Is this a sign of Japan's growing irrelevance or just poor management and fewer hamburger eaters?

There's one in Umeda in the basement of the "Umeda Square Building", you can access it from Dia Mall. Another one I have been to is in Kyobashi, just outside the entrance to Daiei. It looks like there are a few others in the prefecture too, but I've never been to them. I'm actually usually somewhere near the Umeda or Namba ones once a week or so but they are just far enough out of the way that I don't eat there too often. Probably not a bad thing considering the calorie counts...

They do decent chili too.. Or, at least I thought I remember having chili at the one in Shibuya many moons ago; a brief stop-off between corner vending beer and Xanadu dumpster dive..

Back in the day, my little town had a Daiei and a Wendy's right by the front door. We used to do burger runs down there in the middle of marathon poker games. Then Daiei went tits up, and that was it for our Wendy's. Nagoya had a Wendy's in the run-down Daiei building there in Sakae, too. Haven't been in years.

I think there was a Wendy's in the Shin-Matsudo, Chiba, Daiei, too. One of the entrances was at the skate rink they had and you could enter with your skates on. The rink was taken out almost ten years ago, I think.

Yeah, I enjoy their chili too, and they give you hot sauce that you can add yourself to make it hot to your tastes... I hope they end up selling Wendy's rather than shutting it down.

I had Wendy's once in Japan, at a bus terminal in Minou-shi, and it tasted like somebody shot a load in it and then left it around for a few days before serving. It was terrible. I'm going to assume it was some sort of sick joke and that all Wendy's in Japan aren't so awful.

Wendy's in the States is alright, I guess, they were one of the first fast-food joints to not use anything frozen, IIRC.

I don't know how many of you guys remember the Wendy's joke..

Best burger I had in Japan was at Gusto, 500 yen for a burger and fries. Alas it has been withdrawn from the menu.

Wendy's will leave Japan by year's end

Postby FG Lurker » Sat Dec 12, 2009 5:22 pm

Wendy's will leave Japan by year's end
Atlanta Journal-Constitution, December 11, 2009
All 71 Wendy's restaurants in the country will close by the end of the year because the chain was unable to reach an agreement for more development of its brand in Japan with Zensho Co., a large food retailer that controls franchisee Nihon Wendies, said Bob Bertini, spokesman for Atlanta-based Wendy's/Arby's Group, the nation's third largest fast-food restaurant chain.

[...]

Bertini said the Wendy's brand has been in Japan since 1980. Japan is the company's second biggest international market; only Canada is larger. All Wendy's and Arby's restaurants located outside North America are franchised.

Bertini said the chain is looking for new franchisees or joint venture partners in Japan. There is no timetable for re-entering the market.

"Japan is an important player and this is something we will be pursuing," Bertini said.

(Full Story)

Looks like it's a done deal, gone by the end of the year for sure. Maybe they'll be back, but I bet that like Burger King it will come back in Kanto only. :(

Some of you will be familiar with DQ, and I've had me a hankering for one of their triple burgers lately. I read they left Japan in 2000, but sadly my Japan never had one.

I knew about one just south of Matsuyama, so I am sure they would have been in Kansai.

Personally, I could never figure out why they left Japan. The DQ in Tobe was full every time I went in despite it's bizarro location.

Actually, I think every Wendy's I went to has been packed as well; Roppongi, Ebisu, and Shibuya were all packed and it was difficult to find a seat.. Japan is funny like that sometimes; things seem crazy popular, then just suddenly fade away..

I went to an A&W when in Okinawa. Food was crap, but they had root beer floats. Didn't taste as good as I remember as a kid..

It's been said before, but I'd love me a good Taco Bell here..

There was an A&W in Osaka for awhile too. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the sign! Unfortunately it didn't taste anything like A&W in Canada, was very disappointing.

Tried to go to Wendy's for dinner tonight since it was the last chance I'd have before the end of the year. Got there and they were out of buns! WTF!? Girl behind the counter said it would be about 30 minutes til more arrived. I guess the announced closing has boosted their sales more than the expected.

Japan--Life without spice(c)

Postby Taro Toporific » Sat Dec 12, 2009 8:38 pm

GuyJean wrote:...It's been said before, but I'd love me a good Taco Bell here..

Nobody seem to go to squeek-butt Kent Gilbert's Taco Time. That chain of 25 (18?) restaurants went belly-up in less than two years back in '87-'88.

I don't think Taco Bell will ever attempt the Japanese market since there was big money behind Taco Time ---Taco Time Japan was a joint venture of Nissan Motor Sales Co. and Kent Gilbert (Eugene Register-Guard -1987)

As for Taco Bell, they haven't had much luck in Asia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taco_Bell#Outside_the_United_States

The [Taco Bell] chain had operated three restaurants in China, two in Shenzhen and one in Shanghai. However, the Shanghai location closed at the end of January 2008. One location in Shenzhen closed on February 20, 2008]

There used to be a Taco Time in Minami Senju, but last year it turned into a PocaTaco. Still Mexican (-ish) food, and actually better than it was before: the portions are bigger (a burrito set is actually a satisfying meal) and the menu is closer to Taco Bell-style texmex fast food.

I passed by the Wendy's in Azabu Juuban last night and it looked like it was still open for business.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.
