Drunk while in possession of a keyboard should be a crime.

Getting drunk at home alone should be a crime.

Get out of the house, the beers might be more expensive out there but the potential for getting into trouble is much higher (got to keep life interesting).

My 6 weeks of lonely freedom are nearly over. Hooray!

I agree, ramchop, it's better to go OUT and get drunk, but if you must be home alone, a few 500 millies make nice company.

Actually, I don't really understand it.

I have to be REALLY toasted to lose control of motor functions.

If I'm by myself drinking and gaming, I can put away a couple bottles of sake and still be ok to type. It may get hard, but I am still able to and CARE enough to backspace and retype if I make a mistake.

If I lose enough control to not type well, then my mind is pretty gone.

As someone who likes to drink most nights of the week (if even a beer or two) it is real expensive to go out EVERY night to drink. What is the big offence at drinking at home?

I prefer drinking at home.

No temptations to get into trouble with.

Isn't the drink a temptation in itself? :P

Nothing wrong with drinking at home. Gettinhg drunk at home alone is a little sad though.

Which is worse?

Getting drunk at home alone?

Getting drunk at a snack bar alone?

Getting drunk at a shot bar alone?

Getting drunk at a ramen shop alone?

Getting drung at a gaijin bar alone?

Getting drunk at a train station alone?

What's a shot bar?

I've done all of those except the shot bar and Ramen shop

A shot bar is probably the closest thing to the kind of bars you would see in Martin Scorcese movies. I may be assuming to much that they seem more "American" in style (at least older style) in that they are unlike a British or Irish pub, as they usually don't have games, are fairly quiet and smoky, with a bartender that KNOWS his way behind a bar. The expensive type is often portrayed in Japanese dramas, when they drink martinis and the tuxedoed bartender stands quietly waiting to pour another.

The one in my old neighborhood I usually went to was a 12 seater bar with jazz music playing and a VERY talkative bartender in a bowtie who knew more about cocktails and alcohol than I thought was possible. We also had a surf shot bar and a couple reggae shot bars which usually took up the spaces of snacks that shut down. They are usually inexpensive (no cover to 500 yen) and are a good place to go to chat with a buddy. I always liked my old beighborhood bar, as on any night I could go and eventually I got to know the regulars (the master was great at introductions, and the fairly quiet atmosphere and infusion of good alcohol made meeting decent people really easy).

You forgot a couple of the "pathetic" places one can get drunk alone:

In front of the vending machine. (get a beer, down it, get another...)

In front of the "One cup" sake machine. I saw one of those near the ryokan I stayed at in Taito and was mystified by it.

Besides at festivals, I can't remember a non-homeless person drinking the One Cups.

We call 'em "One Cup Ojisan"
