The English didn't buy because it was japanese... they bought it because it was not French...

I don't know who have the worst railways nowadays, the Italians or the English... But they seems to try to outsuck themselves quite often...

Yeah, the Japanese are great with railways. Just ask the Burmese.
Isn't it cute how they change from saying "nihon" to "nippon" when talking about any interaction with the outside world.

Definitely the Italians. The cleaners were on strike this summer, someone had graffiti'd 'with all due respect and kindness, this train is worse than my toilet at home'.

Two winters ago, there was no heating on the train so a passenger went round collecting signatures for a petition to complain, God love him.

English trains are just ridiculously expensive and for want of a better word, shite.

Any bets when it will be disabled by "leaves" or "the wrong kind of snow"?

St Pancras station to Stratford? A Japanese Shinkansen super train serving as a regular tube line on a couple of miles' stretch inside London? Wow. :D Is this something to be THAT proud of? Well, it'll definitely be quicker than a bus tho ...

The Japanese seem to take pride in the weirdest things. Wow, a Japanese industrial conglomerate won contracts to supply trains in several countries. Gambare Nippon!!!

They could have bought German from Siemens or the other fast train maker, Bombardier Transport from one of their former colonies, Canada.

I think the Japanese as master train builders were badly trailing the French and Bombardier in the global fast train market. Hitachi may have thought enough is enough and priced this contract attractively to break the so-called ice and begin a big international push. Very few Japanese trains run on foreign soil. Even in China, Kawasaki/Hitachi are far behind industry leaders Alstom, Sieman and Bombardier.
