Unless he wanted to go on a suicide run, why would anyone want to go climb Mr. Fuji at this time of the year?

Reports say that two men appear to have died but Katayama is safe.

Ego. Katayama apparently wanted to climb the highest mountain on each of seven continents. The two men who died on the mountain were his employees. In part, their deaths were due to Katayama's authority as their boss combined with his inexperience/incompetence. It's common to have mini cults of personality surrounding the "shacho" in most small-medium sized Japanese companies - it's less common to have employees die for their stupidity.

Unless being a "former F-1 driver" qualifies you as a professional climber, I'd like to see Katayama hit with that ubiquitous charge in Japan of "professional negligence". However, his constant sobbing scenes on national TV is probably going to prevent anything unless the kin of the deceased decide to complain . The two who died were Katayama's employees and following his orders.

"Hey, will you two homos keep it down? I'm trying to read my copy of Into Thin Air and only on Chapter One... how the fuck do you think we'll be able to climb Everest if I don't study?"

"Ssssorry, boss.... but it's freezing over here! We were just talking..."

"Well, do your talking elsewhere. Move your tent away from mine. Shove over 10 meters closer to the edge!"

"Bbbbbut, boss - it's really windy out there..."

"MOVE IT! Don't ever question my orders again!"

"Oookaay... Roger that."

I think you are being disingenous here. The wide shows are reporting that the company employees both had fairly extensive climbing experience, one having been climbing for over 30 years so they don't extactly sound like newbees.

According to my wife, he was planning an Antarctic expedition and this was part of the training. The other two were to be part of the film crew.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.
