What Irritates People On Trains

(Last year's survey results)

The Asahi reports (Japanese) the findings of a survey into what passengers most dislike about other passenger's behaviour.

1. Noisy conversations and boisterous behaviour
2. Noisy headphones
3. People slouching on seats, taking up too much space.
4. Mobile telephones
5. Pushing and shoving to get on and off the train
6. People doing their make-up
7. People leaving rubbish behind
8. People sitting on the floor
9. Drunks

In the same survey last year, the biggest gripe was about the way people sat on the seats but, this year, two noise-related bugbears top the list. The survey also found men were more annoyed by mobile phones - making it their number two irritant - while women only had it in seventh place. On the other hand, women placed drunks as high as fifth place while it was only the eleventh placed annoyance for men. 4,247 people answered the survey. They were given a list of unmannerly behaviour and asked to select three. The survey results are published in more detail here(Japanese PDF)

I think the makeup thing is just about the oba/oji-sans busily minding other people's business. Disapproval of the younger generation seems to be a popular hobby there now. The only legitimate complaint could be if they were doing their eyes with a pencil or brush. If the train were to stop suddenly, it could be nasty. BTW, why isn't train-suicide on that list? That would be No.1 for me.

Anyway, for me that list makes more sense turned upside down.
People in noisy conversations don't generally throw up on you or fall on the tracks (unless they're drunk as well); and loud conversations can be entertaining on a boring ride.

A drunk sprawled and passed-out on the seats is merely a photo opportunity for me. My contribution to the arts.

I find people taking up too much space to be a big problem in general, not just on trains.

I hate to say this, but here goes: noisy, fuckedgaijins with a bottle and a half of cologne dumped over themselves annoys me the most recently. I guess this should go under the "you know you've been in Japan too long..." category?

I really hate posters and newspaper articles about people's manners in trains.
Surely there are more important things to devote our attention to?

I don't think most people would mind a quick reapplication of lipstick or something like that. But there are a lot of chicks who pull out their whole make up kit including eyelash curlers. That can be really fucking annoying when you're sitting next to them.

Most of the items on that list would annoy me, but since no one on the train dare get too near "the gaijin," I don't get annoyed.

I just hate when there are other FGs acting a fool, making me "just another loud disrespectful gaijin". Which leads to a "not staring at people" annoyance.

What? No way, I don't want to spoil the fun for all the other dozens of commuters squashed up against the door with me.

Actually, I wish I had the ability to do silent-but-deadlies. I'm crass; I just let 'em rip, then give whoever is standing next to me a dirty look and pretend they did it.

No, the poster is saying, "Ugly chicks who use make up may appear prettier than they actually are, but ugly chicks who don't use make up will always be ugly."

I usually tell them directly, "is it necessary that you do that now?" They then give me this shocked, "A big gaijin spoke to me!" that usually solves the problem and then there is peace again!

-Problem solved!;)

Another thing that gets me riled up are the High School kids that feel it is their God given right to sprawl all over the seats as if they are at some Club Med beach resort! Also how many times have we witnessed people(especially men and kids)NOT giving up their seats to the elderly, pregnant or handicapped people, talk about lack of common sense!

I avoid trains as much as possible, and I'm still sleeping during the morning rush... But when I get the chance to watch a full on makeup application I just sit back and enjoy the show. Pretty scary how much a face can change during the course of a short trip.

Postby BigInJapan » Tue Dec 22, 2009 9:35 am

During my 3-year stint of commuting into Tokyo, one of my faves was being sandwiched in between sararimen with fetid breath and rancid hair as a result of drinking late the night before and obviously not having time for a bath/shower.
The last train on Friday night is another one, but as everybody is generally in good spirits after consuming copious amounts of booze (I may have imbibed in one or two myself), other than the smell it's not as bad as the morning rush.
My real pet peeve is the wankers that feel they just HAVE TO squeeze onto the train when it's full to the door. If I'm at the door they usually decide to wait for the next train, no idea why (I'm sure that me welcoming them with open arms has nothing to do with it...).

I like the girls who completely encase themselves in a corner of the train, face pressed up against the wall, hiding from all the people around them. And me standing near them mumbling about not being able to get over this damn shinkata influenza. Agoraphobics are toys.
