Japan•US Pro Baseball World Series Proposed

Postby Bucky » Fri Jan 08, 2010 5:09 am

The champions of U.S. Major League Baseball could face the champions of Japanese professional baseball in a regular Global World Series under a plan being discussed by the two countries. In meetings with Japanese commissioner Ryozo Kato in Milwaukee, MLB commissioner Bud Selig proposed that the Japanese and U.S. champions play each other, the Nikkansports newspaper reported Thursday.
"I was surprised, Mr. Selig said he wants to realize the plan before his tenure ends," Kato told the Nikkansports.
Selig is set to retire in 2012.
When he took office in 2008, Kato, a former Japanese ambassador to the United States, said one of his goals was an international series between the world's two biggest baseball nations.
Japan is the two-time defending champion of the World Baseball Classic, a national-teams tournament which involves professional players from leagues around the world.

The travel might be a bit of a bitch. I could just see a 2-2-1-1-1 home and home series. They would spend more time in the air than on the diamond.

I don't know how many ad dollars would be flowing from the US for such a venture...That time of the year already has alot of competition for ad dollars on TV sports (football, NBA, ect)...If alot less people tune in to watch the US world series when it is a small market team, I can only imagine the low numbers against Japan's best. I could maybe see it as one game event that no one takes very seriously, like the all star game.

I doubt this will get off the ground. The MLB season is already too long. This Japan/US series may run until the end of November which means shitty weather in midwest or east coast cities, or having to play in a dome stadium somewhere and losing home field advantage.

Or they could play it in Hawaii. Good weather there and it'd be relatively neutral.
