TIME Calls Time On Tokyo

Postby Mulboyne » Mon Jan 11, 2010 6:41 am

Asahi: Time closes Tokyo bureau
U.S. magazine publisher Time Inc. on Friday closed its Tokyo bureau, which opened shortly after World War II, due in part to slumping advertisement revenue. The company had employed a correspondent and an editorial staff member, but will use part-time reporters and experts instead. It will keep sales and advertising staff at its office in Tokyo's Roppongi Hills complex. Rival Newsweek closed its Tokyo bureau last spring. Business Week's editorial division in Tokyo was integrated into Bloomberg after Bloomberg acquired the magazine in December.

What's a part-time expert?
That Asahi article was terribly written....Did the bureau really open shortly after WWII because of slumping advertisement revenue, as the article seems to suggest?

It is beyond silly to pay rent for a sales staff in Roppongi Hills.

That's generally true, however I suspect the floor they are on was previously occupied by Lehman Brothers, and they got a huge whopping discount from Mori (plus none of the regular fit-out fees) to take some of it over.

That's because Asahi is also using part-time reporters and experts instead.

I just cancelled my Yomiuri Shimbun trial subscription due to lack of proofreading and just plain shitty writing/reporting going on. I used to like the Japan Times, but they as well changed both their style and format....so now its just Google News and a few other rss feeds....
