Jakarta Post: Japanese women find love in Bali
Yuko and her two friends enjoy their lunch on Kuta Beach on a warm Sunday..."I love Bali because of its delicious cuisine and friendly people," says Yuko...It's not easy to find such friendliness back home, the 34-year-old says....This is the friends' third visit here in the past year. Yuko has another reason for frequenting the island. "I have *a relationship* with someone here," she says. Yuko hopes she can eventually marry her boyfriend. "I want to get married to a Balinese man so I can have handsome children," she laughs. Her friends also dream of snagging Balinese husbands. "Balinese men are so friendly," Chika says....Apache, a reggae-themed bar on Jl. Legian, Kuta, has become a favorite with Japanese tourists. The night before Yuko and her friends head for the beach, a host of Japanese women dance the night away to a Bob Marley tribute band. Most of the women are here with local men...For some it's just a holiday fling, but others expect to build a serious relationship. "Japanese women love local men living in Bali, either native Balinese or migrants from Java or Lombok; they don't care," says Joko..."As far as they know the guys are Balinese...Most guys just want to take advantage of the women to get new things and enjoy a lavish lifestyle, and the women shower them with lots of gifts," he says, adding he used to do this frequently himself. "At the very least they can get a motorbike out of it...It's so easy to seduce Japanese women. Just chat with them for a few minutes and they'll fall for you"...more...

Take's picture looks like a very old Wai Wai column from when the Mainichi had a print edition.

Back in 1994, a friend of mine was commissioned to make a documentary about Japanese girls visiting Hawaii for sex tours. She asked me to help out with the initial research and, even back then, it became quickly evident that all the action was happening in Bali and had been there for some time. The TV company was only interested in the idea for the US angle so the programme never got made.

The Japanese press have done quite a few features on this but I suppose the recent murders might give it a bit more currency in the same way the Lucie Blackman murder drew attention to foreign hostesses in Tokyo.

The one thing that seems a little different is the way some girls choose to stay on in Bali and even marry. Perhaps they were doing that before but all you used to hear about were holiday flings.

I think this happens everywhere including Thailand and of course here in Canada. There is nothing easier than to snatch a Japanese women on holiday. But the fact that they want to marry a Balinese and live a miserable poor life is surprising.

As an anecdote, I was in Bali 20 years ago at the Club Med and had a fling with one of the Thai workers "GO" for the week. She said that whenever the Japanese tour bus arrived with tourists (80% women) all male GOs rushed to hustle them.

What is a GO?
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

Gentil Organisateur or roughly translated "nice organisers" which is how the staff at Club Med are called. GOs are the workers and GMs (gentil membre) are the guests.
