FYI: Seeing "Avatar" in 3-D

I went to see "Avatar" on Friday in the 109 IMAX Cinema in Kawasaki. Just so you know there are a few scenes in Na'avi (the aliens' language) and for the IMAX version they didn't include English subtitles for those scenes like they usually do in theatre releases of other US films. However, if you have a solid intermediate level or Japanese reading ability you should be able to follow them and even if you can't there nothing that important to advancing the story that's said. Actually, the storyline is so simplistic that even if the whole movie was in Na'avi with no subtitles you'd be able to understand what's happening. Also, a friend of mine saw it in
2-D and he said they did include English subtitles for those scenes.

I've had the misfortune to see Dances with Smurfs twice - once in the US and once in Japan. It was interesting - much more interesting than the plot of the movie - to compare the 3D-glasses distribution process in the two countries. In LA, we paid two dollars more per ticket for the glasses. They were light, flimsy, and sealed in plastic wrap. I thought they were disposable until I saw the big bin customers were urged to drop them in after the show. In Japan (Makuhari Cineplex), the ticket price was 2000 yen, no discounts, no points. The glasses were big, heavy clunkers that had greasy, smeared-up lenses. The 3D effects looked better through the J-glasses, but they also had the effect of dimming the brightness of the image substantially. Maybe it was because they were so goddamn dirty; maybe I just got a bum pair, because I can't believe they don't clean them between uses. Also, after about 90 minutes, they felt so heavy I wanted to throw them at the screen.

Yeah, my Japanese friend said when he went the glassy he got were sticky. I don't think they clean them between uses in Japan. BTW, why'd you see it twice if you don't like it? I didn't dislike it but I went for the tech display more than the movie. I don't think I'd pay to see it twice. Especially not at Japanese ticket prices.

God, what a dumb movie. If the Na'vi were a real neolithic tribe, Suu-ly would've been killed and eaten, and then Suu-ly's Na'vi girlfriend would've been raped by that other Na'vi guy and then had her legs broken so she wouldn't get away.

I enjoyed the movie for the mere entertainment value....if you go in and watch it just for the cg/visuals it is quite good.

The plot of the movie was overly simplistic and the characters one dimensional but looking for realism in a cartoon about big blue aliens is pretty ridiculous.

Yeah, but I was still disappointed they didn't kill Suu-ly and eat him. The grizzled old Na'vi chief would've had dibs on his most succulent parts: his brain, his blue Na'vi balls, and his hair-tendril things.

I think I had the best of both worlds. Here in Ohio, they had some sturdy glasses that we picked out of a bin. Each pair was in a sealed plastic bag.

It was a little awkward at first to wear them in front of my glasses, but once I had them in the right spot, I enjoyed it.

I plan on seeing it again this afternoon in an IMAX theater.

I actually didn't mind the movie. It certainly isn't the best movie of the year, and while there are plot holes through out, it's not bad. The attention to detail Cameron shows to his visuals is incredible... Lucas can shove his 2 bit studio up his ass.
Honestly so long as you don't expect an epic script you won't come out feeling dissapointed.

And for fun, attached this link... Na'vi sex scene. Someone sold me about the link last night at a club I run... I approached it with caution, but it was pretty funny the first time through. Straw drinker and flute lips, who would have thought.

avatar was enjoyable. the cg was incredible.
ended up watching it twice (1x nephew 2x wife) 2nd time was in 3d. the 3d film on the boxy glasses were all smudged up. we wondered as well if the staff even bother cleaning them between films. tried cleaning it with tissue, didn't really do much. prolly woulda been more enjoyable (in 3d) if the glasses didn't fog up as much, or all of a sudden dim down.
