Well if you're gifted and black I'm sure you're familar with the term fucked. The asterisk is just used to soften the affect of this common vulgar slang. Gaijin is a contracted form of gaikokujin which some up-tight foreigners find offensive. In big cities the term gaijin is becoming more rare and my be going the way of the term 'negro' in America. Since you're black most Japanese don't really consider you a gaijin. To them you are a kokujin (black person). Other Asians are usually referred to by their nationalities. By the way, is there anyone out there who actually takes issue with the word 'gaijin'?

While you live in America you are an American and largly respected by the Japanese, but if you move to Japan your status changes from American to gaijin instantly and you lose all rights as an American and most of your rights as a human. Now you are an oddity and an inconvenience to the Japanese.

in short you are f*ked

What is it?

You can be the top of your class, the best on your field, the most famous, rich, successful non-Japanese, but when you enter the door the first time, the first thing Japanese think is

"Ah. Gaijin da."

And that is f*cked.

The word itself doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I may be offended if the delivery was aggressive or deliberately offensive. But then I'm sure I could be offended if someone called me a "muppet" in a particularly nasty tone of voice.

In my own country I've got an "outsider"-like label. Some are offended by it, but I'd much rather be a Pakeha than a European-New Zealander (Christ what a moutfhful)

The word itself doesn't offend me, but how it is used. I don't think Japanese use it to MEAN to offend 99% of the time, but every so often....

da kid puts it in a nutshell...

i asked my boss the other day, when she sees me what does she see and she replied "a foreigner" i replied when i saw her i see my boss, a woman, she said "eh?" there lies the problem i said, tho i dont think she got it or cared about it at all..

What the fuck are you on about?

What does she SEE? Of course she sees a foreigner, just what you you like her to have said? "A handsome man" (nope, judging on appearance again). "A non-descript human being" (errr, you sort of asked for a description). "A talented English teacher".... maybe that's what you were after.

Wake up. The Japanese maybe be racist, but I guarantee you'd have got a similar answer anywhere in the world.

If a courier walks into a busy office and asks "which one is Greta?", the reply will not be "She's the greatly respected economist who collects stamps".
It'll be "She's the Indian woman in the corner" "She's the short lady in the red dress", "She's the one wearing glasses talking on the phone".

The fact is you got your job primarily because you are a Gaijin, why are you upset if that's how you are judged?

i am fucking on about my motherfucking personal opinion , not criticising others or fucking making out that my fucking opinion is "right" or more "valid" than anyone elses, i am not fucking being cuntish judgemental or elitist or critical of another persons motherfucking opinons

its my take on things thats all

i post my opinions and questions, and am not arrogant or insecure enough or just plain ignorant enough to reply and belittle another persons fucking opinion ..

maybe its the hot weather, maybe its your shitty attitude today , maybe people should stick to discussing and not slinging shit at anothers opinion?

"What the fuck are you on about?"

I've used that expression to friends, colleagues and family when I believe they're talking shite. I then follow up that statement with why I thought it was shite.

I wouldn't say that to a complete stranger, but then there's been enough open honest discussions on this forum that I felt I could talk freely. Obviously not. I'll curb my outbursts and walk on egg shells. Sorry

OK, back to the flaming arguement.

How can one claim that "Jap" is a natural abbreviation of "Japanese", and yet be offended by a natural abbreviation of "Gaikokujin" without sounded a tad hypocritical?

heh you wanna flame war?

sure, but it aint comin from me..

i will say tho, if you had ever read what i wrote on this subject you wouldnt be asking me now..

i have never said here, or anywhere else, or thought that i use or find acceptable the term "jap" to describe people

i have said, and do use the term, as does my wife and ooh about 99.9 percent of people in the games industry outside japan, and anyone whose hobby or work relates around things japanese

to describe something japanese, be they games, food, objects etc

as in jap version, jap fooc, jap car etc

i personally have never heard anyone use the term to describe a japanese , nor have i used it myself

i wouldnt / dont take offence at being called a brit/ limey et al, but do take offence at being called an alien

also , the way the word gaijin gets said, and even using it at all is offensive.. do i see or judge by race? no, by personal merit only..

err just figured that you may not have necesarily aimed that at me, but at the people here who find it offensive in general, but fuck it, ive already typed it ^^

i dont know how much discrimination / violence even you , your friends / partner have encountered back home, or here, but that has always added to my hatred of racism and discrimination.

i wont go into details over what has happened to me and my wife back in the uk, and here in japan, as its too personal to mention. needless to say police on both sides of the water didnt give a shit or do anything much.

if you really knew me, and my family situation and what happened back in the uk on several occasions, and indeed here, then perhaps you could say that

as it is, it just seems like smug judgementalism - is that a word?

anyway its hot and im in a bad mood today so dont take any of this too seriously, as if anyone would anyhow..

i dont see how i judged any of his questions, not that i need to answer or justify myself here or anywhere.. who is to say any person is right or wrong?

rather than being vague come out and say what you think...

if that came from someone like mr B then it would carry more weight, as it is, it doesnt, so some clarification please.. if its just gonna be some kind of attack on my views or opinions dont bother as theres enough flaming in this forum as it is, and i have no interest in that sort of thing..

i am interested in discussions and finding answers to questions and news on current or past affairs however..

many people on this board have been kind enough to offer some good advice and a wide range of opinions which on several occasions have been of immense help, and i am genuinely grateful for that. however if anyone feels like attacking my views, or having a go at me, theres always the ignore button and as i really dont care what anyone thinks of me, family and workmates being the exceptions, see no need to get into some pointless argument with anyone..

i do know this amazingly clever guy from the usa, who moved to lithuania, and hopefully he will offer his views here at some point, he's a damn clever and intellectual , funny also.. complete opposite of me then ^^

right off to summer camp!

I just don't get it that's all. Same with blacks calling each other "nigger", if you're offended by it then don't use it. If a Japanese person overhears me refer to myself as a gaijin (and I often do), then surely they are entitled to find it reasonable to use that term around me.

I accept your arguement that you don't like being judged solely by the fact that you come from outside of Japan. But like it or not in Japan it's the most strikingly obvious feature about you. If I saw you across the road in Sapporo my first thought would probably be "look, another gaijin".

Sure be offended by the delivery, the attitude, the racism. But as Naniwan Kid said, in most cases the simple word "gaijijn" is not meant in that way.

I think the difference between Kotatsuneko's assertation and Ramchop's is this.

When I walk the streets of Japan and see another F.G. I think "Oh, there's another F.G."

We all do that. That's natural, and not wrong.

When I walk into my house at home and see my wife I don't think "Oh, there's a Japanese woman." I think "Oh, there's my wife."

Kotatsu asked his BOSS. Someone who sees him every day. I don't know how long he has been at the company, but if after 6 months their initial reaction every morning is "Ah, Gaijin da.", then I think that is F * C K E D.

It maybe fucked but it depends entirely on the relationship with the boss. I get on well with my boss, give him private English lessons 3 times a week, go out drinking with him occassionally... but still I'd feel uncomfortable asking him a politically loaded question like that.

It's not merely: "Here I am, judge me"...
it's: "Here I am, judge me, and I'll judge you from your response"
