10 Koreans Apparently Seek Embassy Asylum

BANGKOK, Thailand - Ten Koreans, possibly from the communist North, sneaked into the Japanese Embassy in Bangkok on Thursday...citing unnamed sources, said the [Japanese]Foreign Ministry was cautioning embassies and consulates abroad that people who have fled from North Korea may be asking for protection.

"...officials also say that most of the ten possess documents reportedly issued by the Thai office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The officials say the content of the documents includes a request to protect the safety of the bearer. "

N. Korean refugees seek asylum in Japan: Thai police chief
BANGKOK, Aug. 4, Kyodo- Ten North Koreans currently taking refuge inside the Japanese Embassy ..the embassy is still awaiting a decision from Tokyo, Thailand's national police chief Sant Sarutanonda said Monday.
''This group wants to go to Japan. Now the Japanese embassy provides them temporary shelter while waiting for the Japanese government to decide,'' Sant told reporters, adding that if Tokyo rejects them, they would be sent to South Korea.
